Salukis edge Shocks in OT, 74-67

Box Score

Wichita, Kan.- Despite a career-high 23 points from senior Matt Braeuer, Wichita State (10-16, 3-12) could not hold off a late rally and fell to Southern Illinois (14-12, 9-6) in overtime, 74-67, Saturday night inside Charles Koch Arena.

Fellow senior P.J. Couisnard was the only other Shocker in double-figures with 17 points. Junior Ramon Clemente led WSU on the boards with 12.

Bryan Mullins paced the Salukis with 16 points. Randal Falker had a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds while Tyrone Green and Joshua Bone each chipped-in 12 points.

Phil Thomasson got WSU on the scoreboard first with a tip-in off a Couisnard miss. Two layups from Braeuer and one from Couisnard helped the Shockers race to an 8-2 lead with 15:07 on the clock. SIU stormed back and took an 11-10 lead on a Bone three-pointer at the 11:16 mark.

Braeuer took charge and put the Shockers on his back as he reeled off a personal 10 point run for a 20-15 lead. With just over five minutes to play in the half, Braeuer had outscored the Salukis by himself, 16-15. Braeuer finished the half with 18 points and WSU went into the locker room with a 31-29 lead.

The Shockers jumped out to a 37-31 lead to start the second half. SIU went on an 8-1 run, capped by a layup by Green, with 12:33 to play. A Braeuer layup capped a 14-3 run that gave WSU its largest lead of the game, 52-42, with 7:48 in regulation.

Mullins started to heat up from behind the arc and almost single-handedly brought SIU back. He hit three three-pointers in the final seven minutes to help erase the WSU lead. Falker hit two free-throws with 36 seconds left to give the Salukis a one point lead. Couisnard was fouled while driving to the basket with nine seconds to play, but only connected once from the foul line to tie the game.

SIU had a shot to win in regulation, but Mullins and Shaw missed jumpers and the game went to overtime.

The Shockers fell behind to start the overtime as a Bone three-pointer put SIU up 66-60 with 2:21 to go. Ramon Clemente gave WSU some life with an old-fashioned three-point play to make it 66-63, but the Shockers would get no closer.

WSU is back in action Tues., Feb. 19 as the Shockers travel to Terre Haute, Ind., to take on Indiana State. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. and the game will be televised on Kansas Now 22.
