Hitting nearly the same with Wichita State swinging at a .247 clip to Missouri State's .250, the teams headed into the deciding set. After the host team fell behind 2-0, the Shockers fought its way to a fifth set.
Although WSU fell behind early in the evening, the No. 1 seed grabbed the lead when most necessary. Two kills by MVC player-of-the-year
Emily Stockman and a Missouri State error gave the Shockers the 6-2 lead. As they had the entire match, the Bears battled. Sophomore Bethany Fuller's kill pulled her Bears within two, 7-5.
Sophomore
Sarah McGee's kill negated the pair from MSU freshman Calli Norman, and the Shockers maintained the lead, 10-7. Despite the thundering crowd of more than 4,000 Shocker fans, the Bears stayed focused. A kill from sophomore Cara Hackmann and a WSU attack error pulled the Bears within one, 11-10.
A rash of block errors plagued the Bears and benefited the Shockers, but only briefly. Junior Sara Staubach continued her role as the Bears offensive catalyst, and her kill tied the set, 12-12. The two traded points again before a Staubach kill found the Shockers down, 14-13, but a McGee kill and an incredibly timed ace from MVC freshman-of-the-year
Mary Elizabeth Hooper turned the game point back in the Shockers' favor.
But the lead wouldn't last, the Bears strung three-straight points together to knock off the regular season undefeated champs, 17-15.
A pair of kills from junior
Katie Niggemeyer broke open an 11-5 Shocker lead in the beginning of the first set. However, a .257 Bears' hitting percentage saw the Missouri State hitters chip away at the Shockers' largest margin of the set.
Missouri State battled to keep the first set close, using back-to-back kills by Staubach to tie the set, 19-19. Stockman responded with a kill of her own before Staubach connected on her third in as many attempts to maintain a tied score.
Freshman Kelley Michnowicz added a kill and took advantage of a Shocker attack error to give the Bears a 23-21 lead. Stockman and junior
Stephanie Tokarz rallied kills to pull the Shockers within one, 24-23. A kill by Hackmann proved lethal to the Shockers as the Bears took the first set and the early lead, 25-23.
Missouri State kept rolling to take a quick 4-1 lead to start set number two, but was short lived when back-to-back kills from Hooper and McGee tied the set, 4-4.
Consecutive attack errors by Wichita State prompted a timeout call from Coach
Chris Lamb, but it did little to slow Missouri State. Staubach and freshman Julia Cawthra, who made her first career start in the Bears' quarterfinal match, combined to stretch their lead, 12-6.
Looking to get its rhythm back, junior
Lindsey Eckenrode connected on a kill for Wichita State, but was answered immediately with a Staubach kill. By the end of the second set, the Missouri State junior had collected eight kills while her team was hitting a solid .293 collectively.
Stockman and McGee threw a one-two punch for the Shockers, each notching kills to bring the Shocks within five. But MSU's offensive attack proved impossible to shake, as the lower-seeded team's lead grew, 22-14.
An
Amanda Backes kill was too little, too late for the Shockers. A Calli Norman kill finished the set again in the Bears' favor, 25-17.
Missouri State continued its quest to wear down the regular-season champs, playing the Shockers point for point to begin the third set. Kills from Hackmann and sophomore Bethany Fuller cracked an opening for the Bears, taking an 8-6 lead.
But the host team responded using consecutive Missouri State attack errors to take a slim, 10-9 lead. Continuing to trade points, neither team saw more than a two-point margin in its favor for most of the set. That is until a pair of Eckenrode kills and another from McGee gave the Shockers a little breathing room, 19-14.
Backes stuffed a Missouri State attempt and Stockman followed that effort with a kill. By the time McGee landed a kill on the next serve, the Shockers were pulling away, 23-15. Stockman connected on a kill and blocked the Bears' final attack of the set, giving the Shockers their first set victory of the match, 25-16.
Blocks played an essential role for the Bears. The team used two of them to jump out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set. Blocks also played beneficial to the Shocks, as they recorded one to tie the set, 4-4.
As if the crowd demanded it, the teams returned to playing point for point. A timely over the net volley resulted in a kill for Eckenrode, a 10-7 lead for WSU and a timeout call for Bears Coach Melissa Stokes. Each team came out firing after the timeout, and although MSU put points on the board it was WSU who kept the lead.
Guiding themselves with smart plays and ultra-close digs, the Shockers rebounded from a pair of sophomore Bethany Fuller digs and continued to build on its lead. Eckenrode stepped up for another kill and gave her team the 19-13 advantage.
Frustration seemed to spread across the faces on Missouri State's side while the team watched its a 2-0 lead slipping via a 21-17 WSU lead in the fourth set. Stokes used her second timeout to rally her troops, although they showed fight...Eckenrode and McGee took over. The pair combined for three kills to put the Shockers ahead, 24-20.
Never quite safe, Fuller and Cawthra launched consecutive kills to pull within two before the Shockers tied the match with a 25-22 victory, and forcing the fifth set.
