Shocks Sweep Panthers

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa ? Wichita State earned its 28th win of the season with a sweep over second-place UNI. The Shockers (28-0, 17-0) won by scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-19.

Emily Stockman led the Shockers with 15 kills and 10 digs, while Lindsey Eckenrode added 10 kills. Mary Elizabeth Hooper totaled 38 assists for WSU, while Kelly Broussard had 26 digs.

The teams traded points early in the first set until a kill by Lindsey Eckenrode put the Shocks up 5-2. A ball handling error by the Panthers increased the Shocker lead to 11-5 and WSU continued to be in control until UNI pulled to within 20-16 on a kill by Amy Sampson. Back-to-back kills by Ashten Stelken cut the Shockers' lead to 20-18 and UNI pulled to within one at 20-19 with a service ace. A kill by Katie Niggemeyer put the Shocks up 22-19 and a kill by Sarah McGee brought WSU to set point at 24-21. WSU won the set 25-21 on a kill by Eckenrode. Emily Stockman led the Shockers with nine kills in the first set and hit .421, while as a team WSU hit. 364.

The teams played to a 7-7 tie in the second set before a kill by Amanda Backes put the Shocks up 11-7. A Panther miscue increased the Shocker lead to 14-8 and a kill by Mary Elizabeth Hooper made the score 18-10. A Shocker hitting error cut the lead to 19-14, but WSU responded with three-straight points to go up 22-14. The Shockers won the set 25-16 on a kill by Eckenrode.

A Stockman kill put the Shocks up 5-1 early in the third set, but UNI pulled to within 9-5 after a Shocker miscue. Another Eckenrode kill gave the Shocks a 13-6 advantage, but three-straight service aces by Kayla Grunder cut the lead to 14-10. An ace by Kelly Broussard put WSU up 18-12, but UNI again battled back to within 18-14 and then to 20-18. Back-to-back Shocker blocks made the score 23-18 and WSU held on to win 25-19.

The Shockers wrap up the regular-season at Missouri State on Fri., Nov. 21.
