WICHITA, Kan.?Wichita State jumped out to an early 15-0 lead in the opening five-minutes, and never surrendered the lead to take a 71-58 victory over visiting Emporia State in the Shockers' exhibition at Charles Koch Arena.
In the first half, J.T. Durley's three-pointer at the 19:35 mark started WSU's 15-0 run. Durley caught fire early, scoring seven of the Shockers' first nine points. The sophomore finished the contest with 14 points and six rebounds.
“I liked the way J.T. played tonight," Coach Gregg Marshall said. "He helped out on defense,
taking those charges. The threes that he took were wide-open and in
rhythm. He's playing better, we've just got to get him to where he can
give more quality minutes.”
Durley wasn't on his own, as the Shocks shot 62 percent, and an even more impressive 60 percent from behind the new arc midway through the first half. Junior A.J. Hawkins led all scorers with nine, and senior Ramone Clemente brought down half of the team's 18 first-half rebounds. Clemente finished with 14 boards.
For Emporia State, sophomore Matt Boswell tallied 15 points, 13 coming in the first half. The Wichita native nailed three three-point baskets in the half to shorten the Hornets' deficit, 29-22.
Wichita State quickly stretched the lead with a three from sophomore Reggie Chamberlain, but Emporia State answered with two of its own to whittle the lead further, 35-30.
Not to be outdone, junior A.J. Hawkins jump shot at the buzzer pushed the Shocks' lead back to a double-digit margin, 42-32, to end the half.
The final half started with significantly more even point distribution. A 6-5 run began the second half before Wichita State's shooters caught fire once again. A smooth jumper from freshman Toure Murry and a lay-up by fellow frosh Garrett Stutz widened the gap, 54-39.
After a short lull in offense, Coach Gregg Marshall called a timeout, resulting in quick lay ups from sophomore J.T. Durley and freshman Clevin Hannah keeping their team's lead solid, 62-47.
Despite never having the lead Monday night, Emporia State battled relentlessly. A three from junior Robert Moores followed by a strong lay-up from senior Shang Ping chipped away at the Shockers. With less than four minutes to play, the Hornets cut the lead to 63-56.
Once again, Wichita State's offense took charge, two baskets from Durley and a three-pointer from Chamberlain finished the night, 71-58.
The Shockers make their regular season debut at home on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 2:05 p.m. against Florida A&M.
