Box Score WICHITA, Kan. - A momentum swinging second set deflated the Redbirds' best attempt at taking out the undefeated Shockers (15-0, 4-0). No. 14 Wichita State swept the match, 25-20, 29-27, 25-16.
The Shockers raced out to a 12-6 lead in the first set helped by back-to-back kills from
Lindsey Eckenrode. The Redbirds pulled to within 17-14 after a block and a Shocker hitting error and to 19-17 after a kill by MC Richmond. Back-to-back errors by ISU gave the Shocks a 21-17 lead and then an ace by
Melissa Granville increased it to 22-17. The Shockers won the set 25-20 after a Redbird service error. Eckenrode had four kills in the set, while WSU held ISU to a .100 hitting percentage.
The Redbirds took a 12-10 lead in the second set and increased it to 15-12 after a service ace by Kristin Stauter. The Shockers tied the score at 17 after a kill by
Emily Stockman and a Redbird error and took the lead 18-17 with a block. The teams traded points until the Shockers finally won 29-27 on a Redbird hitting error.
In the third set, the Shocks jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, but the Redbirds cut it to 8-4 after a kill by Richmond. Back-to-back Shocker blocks increased the lead to 12-6 and an
Angela Jakubov kill put WSU up 19-10. WSU won the set 25-16 after a Stockman kill.
Stockman led the offense charge with 11 kills. Freshman setter
Mary Elizabeth Hooper added six kills and hit .385, while handing out 28 assists. Defensively, senior
Kelly Broussard dug 15 Redbird attempts. Fellow senior
Angela Jakubov tallied six blocks.
The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Oct. 4 against Indiana State at 7 p.m.
