Shockers Outlast Panthers, Take Match, 3-2

Box Score WICHITA, Kan. ? A 14-0 run in the middle of the fourth set powered the No. 14 Shockers past an unrelenting Northern Iowa Panther squad. Wichita State took the fourth set and followed with a victory in the fifth to keep its undefeated campaign alive on Friday night, 3-2 (25-23, 26-28, 22-25, 25-16, 15-12).

The teams traded points early in the first set until back-to-back blocks by the Panthers gave UNI a 9-6 lead. The Shockers went on a five-point run to take a 13-12 lead and after that the teams went back-and-forth. WSU grabbed a 20-17 lead after back-to-back Panther errors, but UNI pulled to within 21-19 after a service ace by Ashten Stelken. A kill by Stephanie Tokarz put the Shocks up 23-19, but a kill by Amy Sampson pulled the Panthers back within two at 23-21. Back-to-back Shocker hitting errors tied the score at 23, but a service ace by Emily Stockman gave WSU a 25-23 win.

UNI jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set and increased it to 8-4 on a kill by Sampson. A Stockman kill pulled the Shockers to within 9-7 and a Panther hitting error tied it at 10. WSU took a 13-11 lead after a UNI hitting error, but the Panthers tied it at 16 on a service ace by Shannon Aschoff. Back-to-back kills by Stockman and Mary Elizabeth Hooper put the Shocks back up 19-16, but UNI tied it at 22 with a block. Another Panther block gave UNI a 24-22 lead, but a Panther error tied the score at 24. A Shocker hitting error put UNI up 25-24, but a kill by Sarah McGee tied the score back at 25. The teams traded points until a Shocker hitting error gave UNI a 28-26 win.

A Sampson kill put UNI up 5-2 in the third set and a kill by Aschoff increased it to 11-7. A kill by Lindsey Eckenrode pulled the Shockers to within 13-11 and a Shocker block tied the score at 17. A Panther block gave UNI a 21-20 lead and a Sampson kill increased it to 23-20. UNI won the set 25-22 on a kill by Sampson.

Two-straight kills by Stelken gave UNI a quick 2-0 lead in the fourth set and an Aschoff kill increased the lead to 4-0. The Panthers ran out to a 9-3 lead, but the Shockers cut it to 10-6 on back-to-back service aces by Kim Wadsworth. A 4-0 run by UNI put the Panthers up 14-8, but a McGee kill tied the score at 15. A kill by Stockman gave the Shockers their first lead of the set at 16-15 and back-to-back Panther hitting errors put the Shocks up 18-15. A Panther hitting error brought the Shockers to set point at 24-15 and WSU won 25-16 on a Panther service error.

A service ace by Kelly Broussard gave WSU a 3-0 lead in the fifth set, but a Panther block cut the lead to 3-2. A kill by Eckenrode gave the Shocks a 7-4 lead, but four-straight Shocker hitting errors gave UNI an 8-7 lead. The teams traded points until the Shockers took a 10-8 lead on an Eckenrode kill. The Shockers reach match point at 14-10 with a block, but the Panthers cut the score to 14-12 with a service ace by Chelsea Saunders. The Shockers won 15-12 after a kill by Katie Niggemeyer.

Broussard led the defensive effort while setting career records of her own. The senior's 43 digs was a career high, and fell just two shy of the Shockers' all-time record. Stockman and Eckenrode collected 15 and 13 kills, respectively to lead the offense. McGee kept pace hitting .312 and knocking down 12 kills.
The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Oct. 18 against Bradley at 7 p.m.
