WBB Drops Valley Opener at Creighton, 83-47

1/3/2008 1:00:00 AM

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton (8-4, 1-0) connected on 12 3-point field goals as the Bluejays blitzed the Wichita State women's basketball team (6-7, 0-1), 83-47, Friday night in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams inside Civic Auditorium.

Kiki Stephens led the Shockers with a game-high 19 points and seven rebounds, the only WSU player in double figures on the night. Whitney Rice added eight points. WSU went 0-for-10 from 3-point range and shot just 27 percent on the night.

Creighton was lead by four players in double figures, including Kelsey Woodard's team-high 13. CU had an impressive 27 assists on 30 baskets, executing its offense to near perfection, falling two points short of the most points WSU has surrendered in a game this season.

The teams traded points early with neither team able to gain an advantage until Creighton broke a 10-10 tie with a 12-0 run to take a 22-10 lead following a Kristina Voss layin with 8:18 left in the half. Kyrie Kinder's jumper at the 7:47 mark ended a four-minute scoring drought for the Shockers, but CU answered with a Sam Schuett layin in transition to take a 24-12 advantage with just more than seven minutes left to play in the first.

The Bluejays then ripped off another 8-0 run to take a 32-12 lead following Kristi Woodard's 3-pointer with 3:56 left, giving CU its largest lead of the game to that point. Stephens ended another four-minute scoreless run by the Shockers with an old fashioned three-point play, but Creighton answered with back-to-back 3-pointers by Tyrai Bronson to open up a 23-point lead with 2:30 left in the half. The Bluejays outscored the Shockers 7-5 over the final two minutes of the first to take a 45-20 lead into the break, WSU's largest halftime deficit of the season.

Creighton shot 45 percent from the field in the first half, including seven 3-pointers. WSU shot just 24.2 percent from the floor in the first without the aid of a 3-pointer, going 0-for-5 from long range in the half. CU's bench outscored Wichita State 23-0 in the first frame.

The Shockers never threatened in the second half as the Bluejay 3-point barrage continued, allowing Creighton to extend the lead to as many as 40 down the stretch, sending the Shockers to 0-1 in conference play.

WSU wraps up its conference-opening two-game road swing at 2:07 p.m., Sunday at Drake.
