Purple Aces Down Shocks, 76-60

1/12/2008 1:00:00 AM

WICHITA -- Rebekah Parker's game-best 23 points and a late Evansville run sent Wichita State (6-10, 0-4) to its fourth-straight loss as the Purple Aces (7-7, 2-2) slipped past the Shockers, 76-60, Saturday afternoon inside Charles Koch Arena.

Kyrie Kinder led WSU with 15 points on the afternoon, while Kiki Stephens chipped in 13. Parker was joined in double figures by Ashley Austin (14 points), Courtney Felke (11 points) and Shannon Novosel (10 points).

Both teams struggled to score early as an Alex Bunton layin at the 19:49 mark was the only basket through the first six minutes of play before Marcy Sudbeck gave the Shockers a 4-0 lead with a layin at the 14:00 mark of the first.

Evansville recorded its first points on a Courtney Felke jumper with 13:47 left, and took its first lead with a Felke 3-pointer with 12:44 left, 5-4. The teams exchanged points until a Robyn Jennings 3-pointer and an Ashley Austin layin in transition gave UE a 18-12 lead with 9:09 left in the first.

The Shockers answered with four-straight but the Aces answered with another 3-pointer, this time from Ashlee Barrett, and an Austin free throw to regain a seven-point advantage with under seven minutes left in the first. UE pushed the lead to as many as 11 down the stretch before taking a 35-26 lead into the break.

The Aces were 4-for-9 from 3-point range in the first half, and outscored the Shockers at the free-throw line 7-2.

A 10-2 run by the Shockers early in the second half brought WSU to within three following Samantha Smith's layin that cut the deficit to 41-38, but UE responded with a 10-2 run of its own to push back out to a 51-40 lead with under 12 minutes left in the game.

Kyrie Kinder's 3-pointer with 8:33 left cut the deficit to 56-52 before a pair of Bunton free throws brought the Shockers to within two with 8:14 remaining in the game, the closest the Shockers had been since the first half. The teams traded points yet again until the Aces ripped off six-straight to take a 63-56 lead following a pair of Parker free throws with 5:09 left.

WSU cut the deficit to as few as five twice before a Parker free throw with 1:40 left gave UE a 68-60 edge. Parker's free throw was the beginning of a 5-0 run that put the Shockers away, as WSU failed to score in the final 3:21 to fall to 0-4 in conference play.

WSU is next in action at Bradley and UNI next weekend. The Shockers take on Bradley a7 7:05 p.m., Thursday night before travelling to take on the Panthers at 7:05 p.m., Saturday in Cedar Falls.
