Shockers Top Bradley 3-1

WICHITA, Kan. ? Wichita State (7-3, 1-0) opened Missouri Valley Conference play with a four-game win over Bradley (1-10, 0-1).  The Shockers won by scores of 30-16, 30-15, 28-30 and 30-15.

 

Emily Stockman led the Shockers with 18 kills and also added 15 digs, while Angela Jakubov had 16 kills and seven blocks.  Abby Harsh dished out 44 assists and Kelly Broussard had 16 digs.

 

The teams traded points early in game one until the Shockers took a 14-10 lead after a block by Sara Lungren and Stephanie Tokarz.  WSU increased it to 20-10 on a Bradley hitting error before the Braves finally scored to make it 20-11.  A Brave hitting error brought the Shockers to game point at 29-15 and WSU won the game 30-16 on a Lungren kill.

 

The Shockers jumped out to a 13-8 lead in game two and increased it to 22-11 after a BU hitting error.  WSU reached game point 29-15 on a Brave service error and a kill by Amanda Backes gave the Shocks a 30-15 win.

 

BU raced out to a 5-0 lead in game three and increased it to 14-5 before the Shockers pulled to within 18-15 after a service ace by Melissa Granville.  WSU tied it at 19 on a Brave hitting error and the Shockers took their first lead at 21-20 on a kill by Angela Jakubov.  WSU increased it to 26-22 behind the serving of Emily Stockman, but the Braves responded with a 7-2 run to take a 29-28 lead.  Bradley won the game 30-28 with a block. 

 

Back-to-back service aces by Granville gave the Shockers a 10-7 lead and a block increased it to 18-8.  WSU won the game 30-15 on a kill by Jakubov.

 

The Shockers next host preseason favorite and defending champion Northern Iowa at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
