WICHITA, Kan. ? Kansas State (3-0) won a close third game and used the momentum to defeat Wichita State (1-1), 3-1, Saturday night in front of a WSU school record crowd of 6,024 in the fifth match of the 2007 Best Western Classic at Charles Koch Arena.
K-State won by scored of 30-26, 25-30, 30-28 and 30-18. With the win, the Wildcats take home the tournament title while WSU finishes play tomorrow at 2 p.m., against No. 14 Cal Poly.
Sara Lungren led all players with 21 kills, while sophomore Emily Stockman chipped in 20, the first time since 1999 that two Shockers have recorded 20 kills in a match. Natalya Korobkova led the Wildcats with 19 kills while three other KSU players registered double-digit kills. Abby Harsh led all players with 56 assists while Kelly Broussard posted a match-best 22 digs.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 14-11 lead in game one after a kill and an ace by Natalya Korobkova and increased it to 17-13 on a kill by Kelsey Chipman. WSU tied it at 18 with a kill by Stephanie Tokarz, but the Wildcats took a 20-18 advantage after a service error and a block. A Chipman kill gave KSU a 26-23 lead and the Wildcats reached game point on a Shocker hitting error at 29-26. KSU won the game 30-26 on a kill by Rita Liliom.
A kill by Emily Stockman gave the Shockers an early 6-4 lead in game two and WSU increased it to 13-9 on back-to-back service aces by Stockman. The Shockers took a 19-14 advantage on a kill by Sara Lungren, but the Wildcats pulled to within 22-21 on a kill by Korobkova. A kill by Stockman brought the Shockers to game point at 29-24 and WSU won 30-25 on a Wildcat service error.
In game three, the Wildcats took an early 9-5 lead and increased it to 13-8 on a kill by Liliom. KSU continued to lead in the game and took a 21-14 advantage on an ace by Korobkova. The Wildcats took a 24-16 lead following a Shocker error, but WSU responded with a strong 6-0 run to pull within 24-22 following a Wildcat error. A KSU error tied the game at 25-25 before the teams traded points until KSU took a 28-27 lead on a Shocker hitting error, but a Wildcat error tied it again at 28. The Wildcats reached game point at 29-28 on a Shocker service error and won 30-28 on a hitting error.
The teams traded points in game four until KSU took a 20-14 lead following a Niggemeyer attack error. The Shockers closed the lead to 23-15, but Kansas State ended the match on a 7-3 run to take the win on a service ace by Stacey Spiegelberg.
