Shocks Sweep Season-Opener

WICHITA, Kan. ? The Wichita State volleyball team (1-0) opened its 2007 season in impressive fashion sweeping North Texas (0-1), 3-0 Friday night in match two of the 2007 Best Western Volleyball Classic.

 

The Shockers won by scores of 30-22, 30-22 and 30-18, limiting North Texas to just a .009 hitting percentage on the night. WSU was led by seven service aces and Sara Lungren's match-high 12 kills. Emily Stockman posted nine kills in her Shocker debut, while Abby Harsh led WSU with 21 assists. Libero Kelly Broussard led all players with 21 digs. Freshman Kaitlyn Anderson posted a match-high three aces.

 

In game one, the two teams raced out to a 9-9 tie before the Shockers went on a 9-3 run behind the serving of Emily Stockman to take an 18-12 lead. UNT never pulled closer than five the rest of the way as WSU won 30-22.

 

The teams traded points in the early going of game two before the Mean Green took an 8-5 lead on a Shocker ball handling error. The Shockers came back to tie the game at 10 after back-to-back defensive rallies, but a North Texas block gave the Mean Green a 12-10 lead. WSU regained the lead at 15-14 on a UNT hitting error and increased it to 16-14 on a kill by Stephanie Tokarz. WSU closed the game on a 16-8 run to win 30-22.

 

The Shockers took a 19-14 lead in game three behind the serving of Kaitlyn Anderson and increased it to 21-15 on a service ace by Sara Lungren. Back-to-back hitting errors by UNT gave the Shocks a 28-18 lead and WSU won the game 30-18 on another Mean Green hitting error.

 

WSU is next in action at 7:30 p.m., Saturday night against Kansas State, who defeated No. 14 Cal Poly earlier in the day in five games. Tickets are buy one get one free, and the first 2,000 fans will receive a Shocker t-shirt.
