WATERLOO, Iowa- Northern Iowa (19-21, 5-11) scored in only one inning, but that was all the Panthers would need as they topped Wichita State (39-13, 15-4) Friday night, 4-3.
The teams shared limited offense and unstable defense, as a combined seven errors were committed on the night. Wichita State got six hits and Northern Iowa was one behind with five.
All of the Panthers runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning, after Shocker starter Travis Banwart had a one-hitter going through the first five innings. UNI managed four runs in that frame, but only one was earned.
Deric Manrique started it with a double off of the left field wall. Douglas hit a one-out single through the right side that crossed the runner. Dane Embury bunted but an error allowed both men to be safe. Jamie Ballesteros reached on another error that allowed Douglas to score and Brett Featherston was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs. Travis Hendrix, who had struck out in two previous at bats, singled up the middle, driving in two and giving UNI the 4-3 lead.
The seventh started shaky as Manrique singled and reached third with one out. Noah Booth took over and retired five of the six batters he faced.
The Shockers went down quickly and in order in both the seventh and eighth innings. WSU almost took it into extra innings after a lead-off walk to Blake Hurlbutt. The junior stole second and with two outs the runner moved to third on an error by the third baseman. Damon Sublett ripped one that landed in foul territory before grounding out to first to end the game.
Wichita State threatened early, advancing lead-off man Andy Dirks to third, but came up short in the first inning. The Shockers got it going in the second with a double in the left-center gap from Conor Gillaspie. Hurlbutt laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner and Dusty Coleman singled up the middle to drive in Dirks.
With two outs in the fifth, an error by Panther shortstop Brandon Douglas allowed Derek Schermerhorn to score from third. Schermerhorn drew a one-out walk and reached third with a single by Sublett.
Gillaspie lined one back up the middle to lead-off the top of the sixth and moved up to third on two fly balls from Tyler Weber and Hurlbutt. Coleman placed a pitch just out of reach of the first baseman for a single that brought in Gillaspie, giving WSU a 3-0 lead.
