Banwart Shuts Down Aces, 6-1

WICHITA, Kan.- No. 7 Wichita State, led by starter Travis Banwart, improved to 14-2 in the Valley and 35-11 on the season after the 6-1 defeat of Evansville (28-16, 9-7) Friday night in Wichita, Kan. Banwart (8-2) held the Aces to one earned run over eight innings. The junior scattered seven hits and two walks and struck out four. Senior Jared Simon closed the ninth, giving up a single and striking out one.

Wichita State tagged UE starter Ben Norton with four earned runs in the bottom of the third. Norton had previously given up only one earned run to Valley opponents this season. Tyler Weber drove one back up the middle and Tyler Hill followed with a hit through the left side. Dusty Coleman laid down a bunt, but Norton fielded the ball and got the lead runner at third.

Andy Dirks loaded the bases with a single to shallow center field and Josh Workman plated the first run of the game by drawing a walk. Damon Sublett drove in a run on a fielder's choice, leaving runners at first and third. Back-to-back singles by Matt Brown and Danny Jackson crossed two more, putting the Shockers up 4-0.

Workman drew a lead-off walk, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. A Brown single brought in the run and the junior moved to second on a stolen base. Conor Gillaspie took one back up the middle to cross the sixth run of the night

Norton fell to 8-3 on the season, allowing six earned runs on seven hits and four walks in six innings of work. Sean McCarthy threw two scoreless innings of relief, giving up one walk and one hit.

The Aces managed only one run off of WSU pitching, coming in the seventh. Robbie Minor doubled down the left field line and came home on a two-out single Alex Acheson.

Right fielder Pat Tumilty led Evansville, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Brown and Gillaspie both went 2-for-4. Brown contributed two RBI and a run and Gillaspie collected one RBI.

The series continues at 2 p.m. Saturday and wraps up on Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday is autograph and trading card day.
