Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. ? No. 10 Wichita State (33-9, 12-2) used seven shutout innings from starter Aaron Shafer to defeat Missouri State (19-20, 4-7), 3-0, in game two of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon.

Shafer (6-2) scattered seven singles, while walking two and striking out seven.  Noah Booth pitched two scoreless innings of relief to pick up his third save.  Dusty Coleman led the Shockers going 2-for-4 in the game.

The Shockers jumped on the board in the fourth inning as Andy Dirks was hit by a pitch, Matt Brown walked and Conor Gillaspie singled to center to load the bases with no one out.  A wild pitch by Scott Carroll brought Dirks home, but Danny Jackson lined into a double play and Josh Workman grounded out to end the threat.

WSU went ahead 3-0 with two runs in the fifth inning.  With two outs Dusty Coleman singled up the middle and went to second on a passed ball.  Carroll then intentionally walked Damon Sublett who then stole second.  Bears shortstop Tanner Mattson then booted a ground ball by Dirks to score both Coleman and Sublett.

The Bears had 10 hits in the game, all singles, but could not push a run across.  They had a runner on base in every inning but the fourth and fifth innings.

MSU starter Scott Carroll (3-1) took the loss giving up one earned run on five hits in seven innings.  Matt Lawson led the Bears going 3-for-4.

The two teams meet in the final game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
