PEORIA, Ill- Aaron Shafer threw a career high 12 strikeouts as Wichita State (24-5, 5-0) extended its streak to 10 games with a 3-1 win over Bradley (11-10, 0-2).
Shafer (5-2) allowed one earned run in seven innings on two hits and four walks. Anthony Capra and Noah Krol combined for the last two innings, giving up one hit each with Capra striking out two.
Bradley's Collin Brennan fell to 1-2 with three earned runs over eight innings. Brennan gave up eight hits and two walks while striking out six. Brad Jones closed the ninth, sitting the Shockers down in order.
Freshman Dusty Coleman delivered his second big two-out hit of the series. Coleman launched a two-run homer, his second of the year, over left field to give the Shockers the first runs of the game.
Shafer sat down six, half his total, over the first three innings of work. In the top of the second, the Braves threatened with runners on the corners and no outs. The sophomore right-hander fanned three to end the inning and also struck out the side in the sixth.
Bradley's one run came in the fourth inning to cut the lead 2-1. A hit batsman proved costly as Justin Carr came around to score on a double to deep center field from Colby Lutrell.
Coleman pushed one up the middle into center field to lead off the fifth. Blake Hurlbutt laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance to runner and Derek Schermerhorn plated Coleman on a line drive hit in the right-center gap.
Coleman, Shermerhorn, and Damon Sublett all went 2-for-4 in the game. Coleman scored twice and had two RBI. Schermerhorn contributed the other RBI.
Bradley's hits were spread over four different players, with Lutrell's double driving in the only run.
Wichita State and Bradley face-off in the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
