Box Score
WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State's Tyler Weber hit three homeruns and collected four RBI to power the Shockers (19-5, 1-0) over Indiana State (9-8, 0-1), 7-1 Friday night at Eck Stadium.
Drew Moffitt was the last Shocker to have three homeruns in a single game, three years ago in the 2004 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament against Missouri State.
The Shockers committed two errors, but out-hit the Sycamores 11-5 in the conference opener.
Wichita State starter Travis Banwart (5-2) allowed one unearned run in seven innings, scattering four hits while striking out 10 and giving up no walks. Noah Krol closed the final two innings, giving up one hit and striking out three.
A walk and three runs can be added to Weber's 3-for-3 performance. Damon Sublett also had three hits in five at bats and scored one run. The junior singled in his first at bat to extend a 19 game hitting streak.
Ryan Hayes, Indiana State's starter, fell to 2-2 on the season, going six innings and giving up five earned runs on eight hits and five walks. Andrew Strange and Brian Gaas combined for the final two innings, allowing one earned run each.
Sean Osborne went 1-for-2 for the Indiana State, but Shocker pitching stifled Sycamore hitters, as no ISU batter hit for extra bases and none had more than one hit.
Weber's first homerun, a solo shot to the deepest part of center field, led off the bottom of the third.
Wichita State added to its lead in the next inning with three consecutive hits to lead off the fourth. Junior transfer Andy Dirks doubled down the left field line and easily cruised home when Bret Bascue poked a single through the left side of the field. That brought up Weber, who sent this one sailing over the left field wall for his second homerun of the night.
Banwart was sharp on the mound, sitting down the first 12 Sycamore batters, with at least one strikeout in each of the first four innings. Marcus Artner got the first hit for Indiana State to lead off the top of the fifth, but Brett Siegmund followed with a double play and Nick Ciolli grounded out to first, giving the Shockers their fifth three up, three down inning.
Indiana State got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh, making it 4-1 on a series of Shocker errors. Chris Schmidt hit a bouncer to shortstop and WSU's Noah Krol made a diving stop, but couldn't come up with the throw. Schmidt reached on the hit and advanced to second on the wild throw. Siegmund hit a hard shot to left field and Bascue misplayed the fly ball, allowing it to reach the fence and bring in a run.
Derek Schermerhorn doubled in Damon Sublett in the seventh inning and a Dirks single plated Schermerhorn. Weber homered off the scoreboard in the eighth, sealing the Shockers 7-1 win.
The two teams meet tomorrow at 2 p.m. and wrap up the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
