Box Score WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State (18 -5 ) shutout Arkansas Pine-Bluff (4-17) 17-0, while the Shocker pitchers combined to throw a one-hitter Wednesday afternoon at Eck Stadium.
The game was the 30th one-hitter in Shocker history, with the last one coming from Mike Pelfrey on April 8, 2005.
Making his first collegiate start, Tyson Fugett threw four complete innings, giving up only one hit and striking out five. The freshman from Bartlesville, Okla. issued no walks and retired nine consecutive batters after allowing a lead-off single in the second. Andy Womack and Jared Simon went two innings each and Dusty Coleman closed the ninth. Simon and Coleman struck out two batters and Womack sat down three.
Damon Sublett led the Shockers offensively, going 4-for-5, with two runs and four RBI. Josh Workman pounded out three hits, scoring three runs and contributing six RBI.
Wichita State had runners on board in the first four innings, but didn't produce any runs until the fifth. Tyler Weber drew a walk to lead off the inning and Ryan Jones followed with a bunt single. A sacrifice bunt from Josh Workman moved both runners to scoring position and a sacrifice fly by Derek Schermerhorn scored Weber and advanced Jones. Jones made it 2-0 after crossing home on a wild pitch. Damon Sublett extended his hitting streak to 18 games with his first homerun of the season, straight over the centerfield wall.
Four consecutive walks to Shocker batters sparked the offense in the bottom of the sixth inning, plating a run and leaving the bases loaded. Workman made those free passes hurt with his first career grand slam to right center field. The red shirt sophomore's second home run of the year made it 8-0. Schermerhorn was hit by a pitch and came around with a single by Sublett and grounder from Matt Brown.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, five consecutive singles produced four runs and a Gillaspie double capped the inning, scoring two more, making it 15-0.
The Shockers added two more in the eighth. Singles from Weber and Workman put two on board and a double to right field by Sublett brought both home.
The Shockers open up Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend with a three-game series versus Indiana State. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and it is 2-for-1 night. All seats are buy one, get one free. Saturday's game starts at 2 p.m. and series wraps up Sunday at 1 p.m.
