Box Score Wichita, Kan.- Wichita State's (16-5) Andy Dirks doubled to left field in the bottom of the 13th inning, driving in the winning run, as the Shockers take the series with Long Beach State, defeating the Dirtbags, 3-2, on Sunday.
With one out and the game knotted at 2-2 in the bottom of the 13th, Conor Gillaspie and Cody Lassley knocked out back-to-back singles to put two on board. Dirks then sent one to left field, just out of reach, allowing Gillaspie to cruise home and win the game, 3-2.
The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning, when LBSU took a 2-0 lead. Steve Tinoco led off with a solo homerun, followed by a Taylor Krick hit. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner over, and Matt Cline singled to bring another run home.
Derek Schermerhorn cut the lead in half with a lead-off homerun in the bottom of the sixth.
Tyler Weber started the bottom of the ninth, the last chance for the Shockers, with a double in the left-center gap. Lassley, pinch running for Weber, advanced on a ground ball by Dirks, but was frozen at third on a grounder from Ryan Jones. Tyler Hill, in a pinch-hitting appearance, singled to left-center field driving in the runner to send the game to extra innings.
Lassley went 2-for-2 with one run. Schermerhorn was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Gillaspie had two hits and Damon Sublett extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a single in the third.
Noah Booth earned the win in 3.2 hitless, scoreless innings with one strikeout. Kyle Touchatt threw 2.1 innings of relief, giving up one hit and striking out three. Starter Rob Musgrave went seven complete innings, scattering six hits and allowing two earned runs and striking out two, while issuing no walks.
The Shockers are back in action this week, taking on Arkansas Pine-Bluff in a two-game series, Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Wichita, Kan.
