Shocks Fall 2-1 to Long Beach State

WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State (14-5) fell in a tight match, 2-1, to Long Beach State (12-5) Friday night at Eck Stadium.

 

Despite throwing a solid 8.1 innings, Shocker starter Travis Banwart was tagged with the loss and moved to 4-2 on the season. The junior right hander gave up only two hits and allowed two runs, one earned, while striking out seven and issuing two walks. Noah Booth faced three batters and allowed one hit in 0.2 innings of work.

 

Long Beach State took advantage of a Shocker error in the top of the ninth to push across the winning run with a double by Brandon Godfrey.

 

LBSU took the lead 1-0 in the second with a homerun that squeezed just fair of the right field foul pole.

 

The Shockers capitalized in the bottom of the fifth on two consecutive errors by the first baseman to tie the score 1-1. Wichita State had runners at the corners and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but a strike out ended the threat and the game with a 2-1 LBSU advantage.

 

Wichita State out-hit the Dirtbags 4-3 with singles coming from Derek Schermerhorn, Damon Sublett, Tyler Hill and Tyler Weber. Conor Gillaspie scored the Shocker's only run, reaching and scoring on the first baseman's two errors.

 

Wichita State's series with Long Beach State continues tomorrow, Saturday at 2 p.m. and wraps up Sunday at noon. Saturday is Seat Upgrade Day and Sunday is Family Day. Sunday you can get 4 tickets, 4 hotdogs, 4 small drinks and 4 small popcorns for only $28.
