Box Score WICHITA, Kan.- Wichita State (13-4) sweeps Penn State (2-8) on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 win over the Nittany Lions in Eck Stadium.
With one out, Noah Krol singled through the left side to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth for Wichita State. Dusty Coleman led off the inning with a single to right field and moved to second with a sacrifice bunt from Tyler Weber. Coleman rounded third and headed home when Krol poked one through the hole, avoiding extra innings by giving the Shockers the 2-1 victory.
Josh Workman started the offense with a single to center field in the bottom of the first inning. Schermerhorn popped one into shallow left field and Penn State players gave chase, but were not able to reach the ball. Workman, however, going half way on the hit, was thrown out by the right fielder when the ball dropped and Schermerhorn reached on the fielder's choice. In an attempt to pick off the runner, Penn State starter, Scott Gaffney, threw wildly to first, allowing Schermerhorn to advance to third base. Brown grounded out to second in the next at bat, but it was enough to push the run across, giving the Shockers an early 1-0 lead.
An error proved costly for Wichita State as a single by Jim Leitgeb was brought around by a sacrifice bunt, the error and another single to knot the game in the third.
Wichita State starter Aaron Shafer threw a solid six innings, giving up one unearned run and scattering six hits with seven strike outs. Reliever Anthony Capra threw three shutout innings, allowing no hits and no walks, while striking three out.
Workman was the only Shocker with multiple hits, leading the offense, 2-for-4. Schermerhorn scored one run and had one hit and Brown had the other Wichita State RBI.
The Shockers are back in action this week, traveling to Lawrence, Kan. to take on the Kansas Jayhawks, Wednesday, March 14, at 6 p.m.
