Mavs Squeak Past Shocks, 60-59

Box Score

WICHITA, Kan. -- The Wichita State men's basketball team fell to 5-3 on the season after a 60-59 loss to Texas-Arlington (8-0) Friday night inside Charles Koch Arena.

P.J. Couisnard led the Shockers with his second double-double of the season, recording 20 points and 10 rebounds. Gal Mekel and J.T. Durley reached double-figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Rog'er Guignard paced the Mavericks with 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting from three-point range. Anthony Vereen came off the bench to score 13 points while Rod Epps chipped in 10 points.

Guignard came out firing, hitting a three-pointer on UTA's first possession. He hit two more from behind the arc to give the Mavericks a 15-11 lead with 13:03 left in the half. WSU went on a 17-4 run, capped by a Durley dunk, to give the Shockers their biggest lead of the game at 30-22 with 5:21 to go.

UTA then implemented a full court press and forced the Shockers into rushed shots. The defense sparked the offense as the Mavericks went on a 12-0 run to end the half and take a 34-30 lead into the break.

WSU quickly erased its halftime deficit with back-to-back three-pointers from Mekel and Couisnard. Another Guignard three-pointer gave UTA the lead again. The Mavericks held the lead until Couisnard hit a layup while being fouled and made the ensuing free-throw to give WSU a 53-52 lead with 5:31 remainig.

The Shockers couldn't hold on, however, as Brandon Long hit a runner in the lane with six seconds left to give UTA a 60-59 lead and the win after a driving layup attempt by Mekel missed at the buzzer.

“I've been here for over a decade, I think 13 years, both as a player and a coach and I'd say without a doubt this is definitely the biggest win since I've been around,” said UTA head coach Scott Cross. “Our SID was saying he thought it was the biggest win in the history of the program so we're really really excited about it.”

“It wasn't a lack of execution tonight,” said guard Matt Braeuer. “We just didn't make open shots and we weren't quite good enough on defense. We couldn't get the last stop, which normally at Wichita State we do.”

WSU could never get on track offensively, and finished the game shooting 34 percent, including 15 percent from behind the arc. The Shockers also out-rebounded their opponent for the seventh time this season.

“We're going to take wide-open shots as long as we're pretty good shooters,” said head coach Gregg Marshall. “I didn't see too many bad ones. That's my philosophy. Tonight it just didn't go in.”

WSU will be back in action Sat., Dec. 15, as the team travels to Kansas City, Mo., to take on UMKC. The Shockers lead the all-time series 4-1 and defeated the Kangaroos, 85-55, last season in Wichita. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on Kansas Now 22.
