Box Score WICHITA -- Led by Josh Young's game-high 17 points, the Drake Bulldogs (10-1, 1-0) opened the Missouri Valley Conference season with a 62-54 win over Wichita State (7-5, 0-1) Saturday night inside a sold-out Charles Koch Arena.
J.T. Durley came off of the bench to score a team-high 13 points while
Matt Braeuer finished with 10 points.
Jonathan Cox was the only other Bulldog in double-figures with 15 points, including 3-of-5 from three-point range.
WSU got on the board early with a three-pointer by Braeuer and layup by
P.J. Couisnard for a quick 5-2 lead with 18:05 left in the half. The DU press slowed the Shockers down while Young's hot shooting gave the Bulldogs control in the first half.
After Durley gave WSU the 23-20 lead with 7:06 on the clock with a layup, Young calmly nailed his third three-pointer of the half to quiet the crowd. The Durley layup would be the last WSU basket until a Couisnard dunk with 12 seconds to go in the half.
The Bulldogs weren't able to capitalize on the long drought but a three-pointer at the buzzer by Josh Parker gave DU a 30-25 halftime lead.
A three-point play by Young gave DU a 35-27 lead with 18:13 to play. A Phil Thomasson jumper sparked a 9-0 run, capped by a Durley three-pointer, put the Shockers up 36-35 with 14:46 left.
DU answered with a 14-5 run of its own for a 53-44 lead, its largest of the game, capped by a three-pointer by Cox. The Shockers cut the lead to three, 57-54, on a Braeuer layup with just under a minute to play but could get no closer.
The Bulldogs salted the game away at the free throw line, hitting 5-of-7 in the final minute to seal the win.
The Shockers missed opportunities at the free throw line all night, finishing just 9-of-24 for the game. WSU did out-rebound the Bulldogs, 38-35.
WSU is back in action on Tues., Jan. 1 as the Shockers play host to Illinois State (8-3, 1-0) at 7 p.m. inside Charles Koch Arena.
