The Shockers improved to 4-2 Thursday night in Boone, N.C., defeating Appalachian State (3-4), 62-53.

The frontcourt tandem of Donte Minter and Jeremy Clayton combined for 27 points and 13 rebounds for the Mountaineers. In addition to Minter's 16 points and six rebounds and Clayton's 11 points and seven boards, Eduardo Bermudez scored 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting to pace Appalachian.

Wichita State's Matt Braeuer drained 5-of-8 shots from three-point range en route to a game-high 17 points. P.J. Couisnard and Phillip Thomasson added 16 points apiece for WSU. Ramon Clemente brought down a game-high eight rebounds.

Appalachian  led by 11 points with in the final minute of the first half and took a seven-point lead into the break, but Wichita State opened the second period with a 12-0 run to take a 37-32 lead.

The Mountaineers battled back and led by a point with under six minutes to go, but the Shockers scored 15 of the game's final 20 points to avenge the Apps' 60-58 triumph in Wichita last February.

ASU opened the game with a 5-2 lead but quickly stumbled as Wichita State went on a 9-2 run to take a four-point lead. However, the Apps answered by holding the Shockers scoreless for the next 6:18 and rattling off 12 unanswered points, six of them from Bermudez to hold an eight-point, 19-11 lead with 8:16 left in the half. WSU drew within two over the next four minutes before three-consecutive buckets from Minter gave ASU's its largest lead of the evening at 32-21 with one-minute left in the half.

Minter's basket at the 1:06 mark in the first half would be ASU's last until he scored again at the 15:58 mark in the second half, a 5:08 ASU dry spell in which the Shockers amassed their 12-0 run to take command of the contest. The Apps missed 10 straight shots during that span

The Mountaineers took their last lead of the evening with 6:25 remaining in the contest off a putback off the offensive glass from Bermudez. Two possessions later, Couisnard hit a jumper that gave WSU the lead for good, ending a 10-minute span that saw six lead changes and two ties.

With ASU pressing in the final minute, Wichita State successfully broke the press and round Clemente streaking down the court for a breakaway dunk that gave the Shockers a 58-53 lead with 43 seconds remaining.

The Apps missed three-point attempts on their next two possessions and WSU got a got a critical steal with 15 seconds left to seal the victory in Boone.

The Shockers return home to take on Maryland Baltimore County in Wichita at 7:05 p.m.
