WSU Holds On For 67-60 Win Over UIC

Box Score St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands- Wichita State wrapped up the Paradise Jam Tournament with a 67-60 win over the University of Illinois-Chicago, Monday afternoon. The Shockers improved to 2-2 on the season as the Flames fell to 2-3.

WSU's P.J. Couisnard led all scorers with 15 points, while Matt Braeuer contributed 11. Ramon Clemente picked up his first double-double as a Shocker with 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.

Jeremy Buttell and Karl White had 13 points each for UIC. Scott Vandermeer added 10 points and led the Flames with seven rebounds.

The teams kept it close early in the first half, tying the score six times in the first 13 minutes of the game. The Shockers pulled away with nine unanswered points, sparked by a three-pointer from Couisnard. The senior also had a steal on the other end during the stretch that allowed Braeuer to score on a quick breakaway.

A couple of free throws from J.T. Durley capped the run and gave WSU its largest lead of the half, 28-19. The Flames managed to cut the lead to four by halftime with help from a Buttell three.

Wichita State came out firing in the second half, as Couisnard connected from behind the arc in the first 20 seconds.

The Shockers gained their largest lead 52-39 at the 11:45 mark after an 8-2 run highlighted by back-to-back layups from Braeuer.

4-8 three-point shooting from the Flames and turnover trouble from the Shockers allowed UIC to come within three with 36 seconds remaining. Wichita State's Gal Mekel sank four free throws down the stretch to extend the distance, 60-67, and hold on to the victory.

The Shockers shot 49.1 percent in the game, compared to UIC's 39 percent and out-rebounded the Flames 35-27. WSU turned the ball over six more times than UIC, but the Shockers were an impressive 11-12 from the foul line.

The Shockers come back home to take on Wyoming Saturday night, Nov. 24, at 7:05 p.m. inside Charles Koch Arena.
