Shocks Down Bears, 3-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. ? Wichita State (14-4, 6-1) snapped Missouri State's (16-3, 6-1) 11-match winning streak with a 3-1 victory over the Bears.  The Shockers won by scores of 32-30, 30-22, 28-30 and 30-26.

 

Senior setter Abby Harsh set a school record with 75 assists in the match, which breaks the record of 73 set by Yu-Chyi Yang against Eastern Illinois on Nov. 3, 1989.  The 79 team assists tied the school record as the Shockers also had 79 against Eastern Illinois on Nov. 3, 1989. 

 

Emily Stockman and Sara Lungren both posted double-doubles as Stockman had 19 kills and 20 digs and Lungren had 17 kills and 11 digs.  Harsh also added a double-double with 12 digs to go along with her career-high 75 assists.  Kelly Broussard had a match-high 27 digs for the Shockers.

 

The Shockers jumped out to a 10-7 lead in game one and increased it to 19-12 on a kill by Stephanie Tokarz.  The Bears came all the way back and even took the lead at 28-27 with a block, but the Shockers used four kills from Lungren down the stretch to take a 32-30 win.

 

Game two went back-and-forth until WSU took an 18-15 advantage with a Stockman kill.  The Shockers scored 10 of the final 14 points in the game to win 30-22.

 

Neither team had more than a three-point lead in game four until the Bears went up 17-13 on a kill by Jamie Adams.  MSU increased it to as many as five before the Shockers tied it at 26 on a kill by Sarah McGee.  The Bears finished the game on a 4-2 run to win 30-28.

 

Game four was also close throughout as the teams were tied as late as 25-25.  Angela Jakubov served five-straight as the Shockers went up 27-25 on held on for the 30-26 win.

 

The Shockers next play at Creighton on Fri., Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.
