WBB: Shockers Downed by Sycamores, 96-63

1/13/2007 1:00:00 AM

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Indiana State (10-7, 3-3) and the nation's fifth-ranked offense got 20 points from Kelsey Luna as the Sycamores raced past Wichita State (6-9, 1-4), 96-63, Saturday afternoon inside the Hulman Center.

The Shockers were led by Marcy Sudbeck's career-high 17 points, on 8-of-10 shooting. Sudbeck also led the squad with eight rebounds on the day, and registered four steals. Daria Frazier chipped in 11 points for WSU, while leading scorer Kiki Stephens was held to four points while fighting foul trouble all afternoon.

Luna was joined in double-figures by Rachel Maenpaa's 14 points, while Leah Phillips chipped in 13 and Laura Rudolphi tacked on 11. Maenpaa led all players with nine rebounds.

The Sycamores opened the game on an 11-2 run and never looked back, extending the lead to as many as 22 following a Luna three-pointer with just over a minute left in the first half before a Kristen Donnell basket closed the lead to 20 at the break.

The Shockers played much better in the second frame, shooting nearly 47 percent from the floor, but the Sycamores' offense continued to score, as Indiana State opened the second half on a 16-4 run to lead by 32, 62-31, with 15:01 left in the game. WSU cut the lead to as few as 25 following a McDonnell three-pointer with 8:39 left but that was as close as the short-handed Shockers could get, as Indiana State snapped a three-game losing streak.

ISU scored 30 points off 24 WSU turnovers, and outrebounded the Shockers 42-35. WSU was 4-for-9 in the second half from three-point range but got to the foul line just eight times on the day, while the Sycamores were 18-for-26 at the stripe.

Wichita State is next in action at 7 p.m., next Friday when the Shockers return home to host Bradley.
