Shockers Sweep Sycamores

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ? The Shockers won their Missouri Valley Conference opener with a sweep of Indiana State (3-9, 0-1). WSU (9-2, 1-0) won by scores of 30-19, 30-21 and 30-22.

WSU was led by Amanda Moore's career-high 14 kills, while Stephanie Tokarz tied her career-high with 14 also. Lindsey Eckenrode added 11 kills, while Melissa Granville had 17 digs. Abby Harsh had a match-high 49 assists for the Shockers, while leading them to a .304 hitting percentage.

The Shockers jumped out to a 7-0 lead in game one and increased the lead to 13-4 on a kill by Angela Jakubov. A kill by Amanda Moore gave the Shockers a 23-10 lead and WSU won game one 30-19 on a kill by Stephanie Tokarz.

Indiana State took an early 4-3 lead in game two, but the Shockers responded to take a 9-4 lead on a kill by Katie Niggemeyer. The Shockers increased their advantage to 20-12 on another kill by Niggemeyer and won game two 30-21 on a Niggemeyer kill.

The Shockers again jumped out to a 6-1 lead in game three on a kill by Amanda Moore. The Sycamores tied it at 19 on a service ace before three-straight kills by Sara Lungren gave the Shockers a 24-20 lead. WSU won game three 30-22 on a kill by Lindsey Eckenrode.

Wichita State next plays at Illinois State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
