Box Score WICHITA, Kan. ? Wichita State (15-4, 6-2) raced back from a 2-0 deficit and held a 13-9 lead in game five but Creighton's Kelly Goc scored three kills in the final points to push the Bluejays (15-4, 7-1) to the 3-2 win Friday night inside Charles Koch Arena. CU won the match by scores of 30-28, 30-25, 28-30, 26-30 and 17-15.
Sara Lungren led the Shockers with 22 kills, while Lindsey Eckenrode was the only other Shocker in double-figures with 13. Abby Harsh had 45 assists and Melissa Granville added 21 digs.
Jessica Houts led CU with 23 kills, while Goc added 18.
Game one went back-and-forth until the Shockers took a 15-10 lead. CU responded by pulling to within 19-18 on a kill by Jessica Houts. The Bluejays continued to play well at the end of game one going on two runs of four points each to take a 30-28 win.
The Shockers jumped out to a 15-8 lead in game two behind the serving of Abby Harsh, but CU scored seven-straight points to tie the game at 15. A kill by Sara Lungren gave the Shockers a 16-15 lead, but the Bluejays scored four-straight to take a 19-16 lead and never looked back. CU won game two 30-25 on a kill by Abby Baumann.
Creighton jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the third game after a Shocker error. The teams then traded points until CU opened a 15-11 lead after another error on a Shocker attack attempt. The Shockers responded to tie the game at 17-17, following a service ace by Melissa Granville, and the teams traded points again until WSU posted a 27-25 lead following a Bluejay error. CU would come as close as 29-28 after a Jessica Houts kill before Lungren dealt the final kill to win the point and the game.
Down two games to one, the Shockers traded points with the Bluejays until WSU raced out to a 17-13 lead after a CU error. Creighton then answered with a 4-0 run to tie the game at 17-17, before WSU broke out to a 20-17 advantage after a Bluejay error. A Creighton error gave the Shockers a 25-21 lead. CU then marched back to within two after a Shocker error made the score 28-26, but a kill from Kim Wadsworth and a Bluejay error gave WSU the game four victory.
In the second consecutive five-game home match, the Shockers fell behind early as a Houts kill gave the Bluejays a 4-1 lead. WSU answered with a 3-0 run to tie the game at 4-4, and opened a 9-7 lead after a service ace from Kelly Broussard. The Shockers then went up 13-9 after a Jakubov kill, but Creighton responded, tying the game at 14-14 following a Kelly Goc kill. A Bluejay service error gave the Shockers a 15-14 lead, but Goc responded with another kill to tie it at 15-15.
Another Goc kill pushed the Bluejays to a 16-15 lead and a Shocker error sealed the game and the match for Creighton. The Bluejays posted 15 kills in the fifth game alone.
WSU next hosts Drake at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free to the match.
