Shockers Drop Bulls in Season Opener

ITHACA, N.Y.
- - Wichita State men's tennis collected its first victory of the season, knocking off Buffalo, 5-2, Wednesday afternoon at the Reis Tennis Center.

The Shockers (1-0) took a 1-0 lead early in doubles. Juniors Eddie Stoica and Haru Inoue dropped the opening match against Videt Vaghela/Matthew Johnson in the third flight (6-2).Senior Miroslav Herzan and junior Andrea Caligiana defeated Petr Vodak/Villhelm Fridell (6-4) in flight two to tie it at one. Marius Frosa and Murkel Dellien, who rank No. 27 in ITA, came through with the victory (6-4) over Hao Sheng Koay and Ethan Nittolo to grab the doubles point.

Inoue gave the Shockers a 2-0 lead, defeating Petr Vodak in singles action (6-2, 6-3). Frosa, who is coming off a stellar fall season, took care of Vaghela (7-5, 6-2) and gave the Shockers a 3-0 lead. The junior from Romania trailed 5-2 in the first set, rallying his way to five straight points.  Freshman Andrea Trapani got the nod in the fourth flight, his first match as a Shocker. Trapani hung with Nittolo throughout the match, before falling short (6-4, 6-4) giving Buffalo their first point of the match.

Senior Miroslav Herzan went toe-to-toe with Matthew Johnson in the sixth flight. After leading 5-3 in the first, Johnson came back to take the set, 7-5. Herzan, the lone senior and co-captain, took care of business in the second and third sets, winning 6-4, 6-2 respectively. The win for Herzan clinched the win for the Shockers. Junior Eddie Stoica won 7-6(3), 7-6(5) in the fifth flight over Fridell.  Sophomore Murkel Dellien fell to Hao Sheng Koay in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 to give the Bulls their second point.

The victory moves the Shockers to 1-0 all-time against Buffalo. The loss drops Buffalo to 0-1 on the season. The Shockers begin the season 1-0 for first time since 2014-15.
