Shockers Fall at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y.
– Wichita State men's tennis fell Saturday afternoon to Cornell, 6-1 at the Reis Tennis Center.
 
Cornell grabbed the doubles point from the Shockers to take an early 1-0 lead. The duo of Eddie Stoica and Haru Inoue took care of David Volfson/Joseph McAllister in the third flight 6-3 to start the day. In the second flight, freshman Alafia Ayeni teamed up with Evan Bynoe for Cornell. The defeated the Shocker duo of Miroslav Herzan and Andrea Caligiana 6-4 to even things up. No. 27 Murkel Dellien and Marius Frosa battled the top pair for the Big Red, and fell just short 6-4 to Lev Kazakov/Jake Hansen to give Cornell the doubles point.
 
The Big Red jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Evan Bynoe defeated freshman Andrea Trapani, 6-3, 6-1 in the fifth flight. Eddie Stoica battled Daniel Grunberger in the fourth flight. Grunberger won the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 to give Cornell a 3-0 advantage.
 
In the third flight, sophomore Murkel Dellien pushed Lev Kazakov to a third set aftet dropping the first. In the second, Dellien won 6-4, before falling in the third 6-1. The win clinched the match for Cornell.  Frosa went back-and-forth with freshman Ayeni in the second flight. The junior from Romania forced a tiebreaker in the first set, before falling 7-6. Ayeni took the second set 7-5, giving Cornell 5-0 lead.
 
Herzan gained a point for the Shockers in the sixth flight, taking down Hansen in a three-set tiebreaker, 6-7, 7-6, 10-4. It was a showdown in the top flight as junior standout Haru Inoue went head-to-head with Volfson, who ranks No. 95 in latest ITA Rankings. Inoue dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, before rallying to take the second set. In a 10-point tiebreaker in the third, the two traded points midway through to tie it at four. Volfson inched out Inoue to win the tiebreaker (10-8), and give Cornell the 6-1 victory over the Shockers.

The Shockers fall to 1-1 on the season. Cornell improves to 1-0. Cornell leads the overall series 2-0 over the Shockers.
 
UP NEXT: The Shockers take off a few days before heading to Cambridge, Mass. for the Harvard Invite Jan. 27-28.  The field includes Utah, Auburn, Wichita State and host Harvard.
