Wichita State to Honor Seniors at Shocker Open

WICHITA – Wichita State track and field will honor its 12 seniors at the final home meet of the outdoor season Friday at the Shocker Open in Cessna Stadium.
 
The Shocker Open serves as one last tune up before the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, which begin Friday, May 10 in San Antonio, Texas.
 
Wichita State will host athletes from Kansas State, Nebraska, Langston, Neosho County CC, Oklahoma Panhandle State and State Fair CC.
 
Field events begin at 1 p.m., and the team will recognize the seniors at 5 p.m. prior to the start of the running events.
 
Senior Brady Palen, the No. 1 high jumper in the AAC, will face the No. 2 jumper in the NCAA, Tyus Wilson of Nebraska. Palen holds an outdoor best of 2.20m/7'2.5", and Wilson has cleared 2.26m/7'5" so far this year.
 
In the women's high jump competition, Marissa Jensen will go up against Kansas State's Sharie Enoe, who has cleared 1.80m/5'10.75" this season and ranks 20th in the NCAA. Jensen's season best is 1.75m/5'8.75".
 
Sophomore Arantxa Cortez will also face strong competition in the women's pole vault after clearing a personal-best 3.91m/12'10" a week ago at K-State as she will compete against Nebraska's two 4-meter vaulters, Jessica Gardner (4.17m/13'8.25") and Kylie Clark (4.07m/13'4.25"), Kansas State's Claire Bybee (4.05m/13'3.5"), Nebraska's Hannah Preissler (3.93m/12'10.75") and Wichita State pole vault coach Aliyah Welter (4.37m/14'4").
 
Samantha Marx enters Friday's javelin competition with the top seed mark and looks to improve on her season best of 42.91m/140'9".
 
Wichita State freshman Josh Parrish is the No. 1 seed in the long jump with his season best of 7.94m/26'0.75" and is tied for the conference lead. He will compete in the long jump and race against senior Joseph Holthusen in the 110-meter hurdles. The two Shockers are the only sub-13 second hurdlers in the race.
