Eckert Impresses on Second Day of WSU Invitational

1/31/2020 7:47:00 PM

WICHITA, Kan. — The Wichita State track and field teams wrapped up the WSU Invitational and Winny Koskei ran in the 5,000 meters at the UW Invitational on Friday.

The second day of the men's heptathlon kicked off the day's action in the Heskett Center.

Clay Eckert had an outstanding second day. He used wins in the pole vault and 1,000 meters to finish with a personal-best mark of 4,866 points. Eckert earned the same amount of points as the winner Nate Vann (who competed unattached), but Vann won on a tiebreaker. The way ties are broken is determined by which athlete won the most events head-to-head.

Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Steve Rainbolt said he was really proud of Eckert's performance.

"He's going to be a force in the American Athletic Conference," Rainbolt said. "His opponents will be some of his own teammates. We've got some guys dinged up, so today he battled for the win with his redshirting teammate Nate Vann. It was very unique that they tied. It's quite remarkable to land on the same score in this event."

Grant Downes finished the overall competition in third with 4,706 points and Davis Dubbert was fourth with 4,407 points.

Alex Adams won the weight throw and broke 18 meters for the first time this season. She won the event with a marl of 18.07m/59-3.50.

Weston Lewis won the men's high jump with a new personal-best jump of 2.08m/6-9.75.

"He's awkward and wild and has a long way to go in smoothing out his rhythm and technique," Rainbolt said. "When he does that, I can see him jumping up there with Mason Buckmaster."

In Seattle, Koskei finished sixth with a time of 16:21.00. She crossed the line as the second-fastest collegiate athlete at the meet. She did not improve upon her 15th-best time in the country in the 5,000 meters from December.

Next up for the Shockers is a pair of meets on Friday: the Frank Sevigne Husker Invite and the Air Force Team Challenge.

"We leave Wednesday for Air Force," Rainbolt said. "What a wonderful trip that is. It's a great experience for our athletes. They have a great facility."
