WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita State softball team defeated Cowley College, 15-1, in game two of the Sunday doubleheader with the Shockers having 22 hits and two home runs, including a grand slam from Ashton Esparza.
The Shockers continued the hitting form from game one into game two, scoring nine runs in the first inning. At the top of the order,
Mackenzie Wright walked then stole second before advancing to third on a flyout.
Laurie Derrico doubled to get Wright home before
Paige Luellen got Derrico around to make it 2-0.
Asea Webber singled then stole second before
Ryleigh Buck got on base with a single to third to load the bases. Esparza then stepped up to crush one over the left field fence for a grand slam, the first of her short Wichita State career.
Neleigh Herring singled to center field before
Kaylee Huecker smashed one over the left-center fence to make it 8-0. Wright then drew another walk before stealing second with
Kiersten Otte singling to get runners on the corners. Derrico then singled through the left side to get Wright home and make it 9-0.
It took until the third to make it 12 with Huecker doubling to center field, Wright drawing another walk and Derrico reaching first on an error. Both Huecker and Wright scored on the error with Webber doubling to left field to get Derrico home.
In the fifth Wright, who went 1-for-2 with three walks and four runs scored, doubled into left field to get on base with Derrico doubling again to get Wright home. Luellen, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI's, singled down the right field line to get Derrico around and make it 14-0.
Cowley pulled one back in the sixth with the Shockers adding one more in the bottom of the 10th with Esparza flying out to center field to get Kelsheimer home and make the final score, 15-1.
Derrico led the Shocker offense, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and five RBI's while Esparza's grand slam gave her five RBI's. Luellen went 3-for-4 for two RBI's while Bingham had five strikeouts through five innings, allowing four hits.
Bailey Klitzke pitched the final five innings allowing one run but also striking out five.
The Shockers round up the fall slate next week when they play host to Barton College on Wednesday and Oklahoma College Enid on Thursday, both at Wilkins Stadium.
