WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State defeated Texas-Pan American 69-40, Sunday at the Charles Koch Arena in the final game of the 2013 Winter Classic.
Senior Michelle Price led all scorers with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Alie Decker added 13 points, and Alex Harden chipped in 10 points for the Shocker
WSU began the game on a 13-2 run, started by sophomore Michaela Dapprich. Dapprich scored the team's first three points to start the game, with junior Alex Harden scoring the next two. Senior Michelle Price had two three-point plays, and junior Valerierose Agnello capped the run with a layup.
The Shocker defense forced five first-half turnovers within the first four minutes of the game. Rickell Preston of the Broncs scored a layup at the 17:20 mark to end the Shocker run. Decker hit a three-point shot to extend the Shocker lead to 21-4 at the 11:34 mark of the first half.
The Broncs closed their deficit to 30-18 after Alexandria Hill made a three-point shot off of the backboard at the 2:49 mark of the first half. Bonner hit a three-pointer, and Preston hit two three-pointers of her own to extend the Shocker lead to 39-21. WSU would lead 41-21 at the half after Bonner's buzzer-beating layup to end the first half.
Price began the scoring for the Shockers in the second half. She hit a free throw, and then at the 18:00 mark, hit a layup to extend the Shocker lead to 44-23. The Broncs went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead down to 44-31 at the 15:03 mark, but Decker hit another three-point shot to end the momentum.
Texas-Pan American was held without a field goal from the 11:57 mark until the 1:22 mark. During that time span, the Shockers went on a 20-2 run.
As a team, the Shockers shot 26-for-61 (.426) from the field, including 7-for-19 (.368) from the three-point line. WSU forced 25 turnovers against Texas-Pan American, and converted those turnovers into 27 points.
The Shockers are next in action Sunday, January 5 when the open MVC play on the road against Missouri State in Springfield, Mo.
