MINNEAPOLOIS, Minn.- Sophomore Alvaro Gutierrez and senior
Matheus Pereira played their way into the quarterfinals of the doubles
competition on Saturday in the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships at the
Baseline Tennis Center.
Gutierrez and Pereirra defeated Badr Cherradi and Jonny
Rigby of Southern Illinois, 9-8 in the round of 16. The pair will look to
continue their impressive fall season on Sunday in the semifinals against
another Missouri Valley Conference opponent, Anis Ghorbel and James Mckie of
Drake.
Erick Reyes and Tin Ostojic failed to reach the semifinals
of the doubles competition, falling to Abdul Alawadhi and Tomas Patino of
Missouri, 8-4.
In singles play, Reyes made it out of the round of 32 by
defeating Brandon Florez of Southern Illinois, 6-3, 6-1, but fell to the
top-seeded Costin Paval of Oklahoma, 6-2, 6-4, in the next round. Pereira had
the same fate, taking down Billy Paluch of Creighton, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, before
being defeated by Axel Alverez of Oklahoma, 6-3, 6-2.
Guillermo Nicol fell in his round of 32 match to Alen
Salibasic of Drake, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Sophomore Tomislav Gregurovic defeated Matt Hagen of Iowa in
the consolation singles bracket, 6-0, 5-7, 1-0, and will continue play on
Sunday.
