WSU to Face Jayhawks in WNIT

3/15/2011 12:12:00 AM

WICHITA, Kan.- For the second consecutive year and just the fourth time in program history, the Wichita State women's basketball team will make a postseason appearance, this time in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) on Wed., March 16, as it travels up the state to face the University of Kansas.

Tipoff time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Tickets are available through the KU Ticket Office, open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., via the web at www.kutickets.com, or over the phone at either of the following numbers: (785) 864-3141 or (800) 34-HAWKS (42957).

It will be the first meeting between WSU and Kansas since Dec. 11, 2002 when the Shockers handed the Jayhawks an 84-58 defeat in Wichita.  The Shockers trail in the all-time series, however, with a 7-30 record against KU.  Wichita State has not won in Allen Fieldhouse since a 90-68 victory on Dec. 6, 1982.

The Shockers have won six of their last seven games and reached the Missouri Valley Conference semi-finals with a 58-52 win over Creighton.  Wichita State enters the WNIT with a 17-14 overall record, which includes a 10-8 mark in the MVC - the program's best record since the 1999-00 season.

WSU last made the WNIT in 2001, falling in the first round to Arkansas. The Shockers claimed the program's first-ever post-season tournament win with a 67-61 victory over Akron in the inaugural Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) last season.
