THIS WEEK IN SHOCKER ATHLETICSFeb. 19-25 Feb. 19, 1977 - WSU spoils coach Al McGuire's final home game with a 75-64 win over No. 9 Marquette at Milwaukee Arena. A little over a month later, the Warriors win the national title. Cheese Johnson and Robert Elmore lead the Shockers with 19 points apiece.
Feb. 19, 1983 - Wichita State's Keven Peppers sets a school record with a time of 48.08 seconds in the 440-yard dash in Lincoln, Neb.
Feb. 19, 1983 - No. 15 Wichita State snaps Tulsa's 27-game home win streak in MVC play with an 84-81 victory at the Assembly Center. Aubrey Sherrod scores 27 points, making 11 of 19 shots, for the Shockers and Xavier McDaniel contributes 22 points and 20 rebounds.
Feb. 19, 1983 - Jackie Wilson makes 9 of 10 shots and scores 20 points in Wichita State's 97-59 win over Tulsa at Levitt Arena. Sheryl Hastings adds 16 points for WSU, which improves to 13-9.
Feb. 19, 2014 - Fred VanVleet excels in front of friends and family from Rockford, Ill., in an 88-74 win at Loyola. VanVleet finishes 6-for-6 from the field and 10-of-10 at the foul line to score 22 points. He grabs eight rebounds while handing out six assists and one turnover to help the third-ranked Shockers improve to 28-0.
Feb. 19, 1985 - Xavier McDaniel is named one of 11 finalists for the Wooden Award, given to college basketball's player of the year.
Feb. 22, 1954 - Cleo Littleton scores 30 points to give the 15th-ranked Shockers an 86-80 win at Houston. They had been 0-3 previously at Jeppesen Fieldhouse.
Feb. 22, 1955 - The Shockers defeat Oklahoma State 41-39 in the last game played at the Forum in downtown Wichita. Cleo Littleton scores 21 points in his final home game and Bob Hodgson adds eight for the Shockers, who improve to 15-7.
Feb. 23, 1991 - The Shockers open the baseball season with a sweep of Saint Louis by scores of 28-4 and 11-3.
Feb. 23, 2018 - Ryleigh Buck goes 2 for 4 with a double and drives in three runs for Wichita State in a 7-5 win over Texas in Austin. The Shockers score two runs in the fifth inning on RBIs by Asea Webber and Morgan Palmer to break a tie.
Feb. 23, 2020 - Seraphine Bastin's 12 points and career-high 15 rebounds lift the Shockers past Tulsa 70-61 at the Reynolds Center. Ashley Reid adds 13 points and DJ McCarty makes all five of her shots for 12 points.
Feb. 24, 1954 - Paul Scheer's last-second basket gives the Shockers a 67-66 win at No. 5 Oklahoma State, their first in Stillwater.
Feb. 25, 1967 - WSU defeats No. 2 Louisville and All-American Wes Unseld 84-78 in front of 10,811 fans at the WSU Field House. Melvin Reed leads the Shockers with 24 points and Ron Mendell adds 17. Unseld leds the Cardinals with 24 points and 17 rebounds.
