Former Shocker Lewis in Olympics

BEIJING - Former Wichita State standout Randy Lewis will be competing for his native Grenada in the triple jump at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

In 2008, Lewis owns the fourth best mark in the world with a leap of 17.49 meters (57-4 3/4), making him a serious medal threat. He also competed in the Athens Olympics in 2004, finishing 15th in the qualifying round to miss the finals. But, a successful stretch over the last two years has positioned Lewis to compete with the best triple jumpers in the world.

Earlier this year, Lewis set his career best of 17.49m in a victory in Sao Paulo, Brazil. His performance also earned him the Grenadian national record in the event. He finished ninth at the IAAF World Indoor Championships earlier this season in Valencia, Spain.

During his time at WSU, Lewis became one of the most decorated jumpers in Shocker history, earning All-America honors three times. He won four Missouri Valley Conference individual titles, while helping the Shockers to consecutive outdoor team titles in 2002 and 2003. Lewis also owns the Shocker triple jump records in both indoor (53-5 1/2) and outdoor (55-1 1/2).

Lewis will hit the runway in Beijing on Monday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m., for the qualifying round. The competition will take place at 9 p.m. CDT on Sunday, Aug., 17. The triple jump field boasts 44 athletes from 28 different countries. Lewis is the only men's triple jumper from Grenada, and just one of 14 Grenadian athletes at the Games.
