Shockers Wrap up Qualifying at WTO

WICHITA, Kan. -- Three current and former Shockers competed today in the qualifying round of the Wichita Tennis Open.
 
First on the court was current Shocker Eddie Stoica. The senior took on current Jake Van Emburgh, who plays collegiately at the University of Oklahoma. Van Emburgh took control in the first set with a 6-3 win. Stoica bounced back in the second, taking a 3-2 lead. Van Emburgh rallied back to win the set, and the match 6-3, 7-5.
 
Miroslav Herzan took the court not long after Stoica, where he faced Joe Tyler of Iowa. The lone senior for last year's Shocker squad led 4-1 in the first. Tyler pulled out a 7-5 victory to take the first. In a back and forth second, Tyler again come out on the winning side, 7-5.
 
Austin Williams, a four-year member of the WSU men's team, was the last on the court for the Shockers. He faced Toby Boyer of Nebraska. Boyer took the first from Williams, 6-1. Williams lead 2-1 in the second, but Boyer came away with five-straight games to win the match, (6-1, 6-2).
 
Marius Frosa will compete for the Shockers in the main draw, set to kick off on Tuesday, July 3. Frosa earned a wildcard berth after winning the wildcard tournament in Wichita. His opponent and time is yet to be determined.
 
Head coach Danny Bryan also plans to compete in this year's doubles event, with Herzan. Bryan reached the semifinals of doubles a season ago. Doubles play begins Tuesday, July 3.
