Shockers Dominate Mule Relays

WARRENSBURG, Mo.
– Shockers dominate the Mule Relays winning a total of 16 events, including nine on the men's team and seven from the women's team.
 
Due to inclement weather forecasted in Norman, Okla., this weekend. The Wichita State track and field program dropped itself from the John Jacobs Invitational and entered in the Mule Relays hosted by Central Missouri.
 
The schedule change payed off as the Shockers won a total of 16 events, including 15 individual champions. Eight individual champions on the men's team and seven on the women's, the men's "A" team of Rayvon Allen, Austin Corley, Isaac Poe and Adam Gauzy was the lone relay to win an event.
 
The men's javelin team dominated the competition taking first through fifth place, led by Aaron True winning the event with a throw of 68.34m/224-2. True freshman Taran Taylor followed in second place (60.45m/198-4), John Hoplin in third (58.44m/191-9), Jeff Ast in fourth (56.84m/186-6) and Davon Spexarth in fifth (53.74m/176-4).
 
Javelin wasn't the event the men's team dominated, Nathan Wickoren led the 1500m group who placed four athletes in the top five. Wickoren won the race in 3:55.83, followed by Ben Flowers in second with a personal best time of 3:56.83. Cory Landon finished third in a personal best 3:58.54 and Gage Garcia rounded out the top five with a personal best time of 4:00.79. Dray Carson just missed the top five finishing sixth with a personal best time (4:06.49).
 
Shocks took first and second in multiple events as well. Corley won the 400m hurdles with a time of 51.44, followed by Poe in second (53.00) and in the 5000m Austin Sturdy ran 15:06.54 to win the race while Ethan Kossover finished second in 15:19.30. The men's 4x400m teams took first and second, the "A" team won with a time of 3:15.50 and the "B" team of Hunter Veith, Jace Coppoc, Erick Ngaiza and Miles Griffith finished second (3:22.09).
 
Other event champions include, Kyle Larkin in the 3000m steeplechase (9:47.19), Gauzy in the 400m (48.91), Hunter Veith in the 110m hurdles (14.34) and Hayden Bugner in the pole vault (4.92m/16-1.75).
 
The javelin group highlighted the day for the women's team taking first, second and third place. Kelsey Tenbrink led the way winning the event with a throw of 40.56m/133-1, followed by Jessica Gardiner in second with a personal best throw of 37.55m/123-2 and Meagan Williams rounded out the top three with a mark of 36.53m/119-10.
 
The Shockers landed multiple pairs in top three finishes, including a first and second place finish in the 5000m. Tangy Wiseman ran 18:52.55 to claim the top spot and Suzie Wright ran 19:01.87 to finish second. Paula Garcia led the way in the 100m finishing second with a time of 12.05, followed by Deja Young in third with a time of 12.27. Winny Koskei won the 1500m with a personal best time of 4:40.82 and Kendra Schoening ran 4:57.73 to take second.
 
The women placed two athletes in the top five in two events, including a first place victory and fourth place finish in the high jump. Katie Murray cleared a personal best 1.73m/5-8 to win the event, while Shania VanNoster cleared 1.61m/5-3.25 on her third attempt to seal the fourth place finish. Sarah Hines led the hurdlers in the 100m finishing fourth with a time 14.83 in the finals after running a qualifying time of 14.80 in the prelims. Alexi Whatley ran 15.29 in the prelims to qualify for the finals to finish fifth with a time of 15.69.
 
Other event champions include, McKenna Paintin in the 3000m steeplechase (11:44.16), Kelsey Slawson in the shot put (15.15m/49-8.5) and Tyra Bickham in the discus (49.76m/163-3).
 
The Shockers travel to Lubbock, Texas next week to compete in the Red Raider Shoot-Out.
