Men, Women Sweep Multiple Events

WICHITA, Kan. –
The Wichita State men's and women's track and field program swept multiple events in day one of the K.T. Woodman Classic at Cessna Stadium Friday night.
 
The men's 3000m steeplechase group highlighted the running events for the night taking first, second and third. Austin Sturdy led the group of Shocks winning the event with a personal best time of 9:32.74. Ethan Kossover ran a personal best time 9:36.71 to finish second and Cory Landon took third with a time of 9:39.20.
 
The distance team finished at least two athletes in the top in two other events as well. Nathan WIckoren won the 5000m (15:06.84), followed by Ben Flowers in third (15:10.66) and Josh Klein led the group in the 10,000m finishing the race in second (32:23.12), while Alex Moen placed third (32:41.42). Stan Skwarlo III won the 1500m with a personal best time of 4:01.32 and Zack Penrod finished second in the Einars Tupuritis men's 800m with a time of 1:54.87.
 
In the field events, the Shockers did not disappoint winning three out of the four field events in the day. Aaron True highlighted the night with setting a personal best throw of 72.05m/236-5 to win the javelin. The mark is fourth best in Shocker history and currently ranks No. 6 in the nation. Taran Taylor followed in second place with a throw of 63.06m/206-11 and John Hoplin rounded out the top five (60.14m/197-4).
 
Jared Belardo took first in the long jump (7.35m/24-1.5), while Rayvon Allen finished second (7.33m/24-0.75). Allen was not finished, he would later go on to win the triple jump with a mark of 14.91m/48-11. Jeff Ast finished second in the shot put with a mark of 13.68m/44-10.75.
 
The men's team was not the only one with success, the women came away with multiple victories as well. The shot put team swept the medal stand, while the javelin and triple jump group finished with two Shocks in the top three.
 
Kelsey Slawson led the women in the shot put winning the event with a mark of 14.90m/48-10.75, Tyra Bickham placed second (14.55m/47-9) and Amanda Kakoulias placed third (13.11m/43-0.15). Shot put wasn't the only throws group that performed well, Carlea Miles led the Shocks in the javelin winning the event with a throw of 44.75m/146-10. Kendra Henry followed in third place (42.75m/140-3) and Kelsey Tenbrink placed fifth (41.76m/137-0).
 
The Horizontal jumps duo of Meghan Holmes and Skaila White performed well in the triple jump, Holmes led the pair winning the event with a mark of 12.18m/39-11.5 and White took third (11.13m/36-6.25). Holmes recorded another top three finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.54m/18-2.25.
 
Winny Koskei led the distance group winning the 5000m with a time of 17:57.37, while Jordan Maestas led the Shocks in the 10,000m finishing third with a personal best 38:00.46.
 
Shocks continue with day two of the K.T. Woodman Classic Saturday, April 14 with field events beginning at 11:30 a.m. Pole vault and high jump will take place in the Heskett Center on campus at Wichita State while the hammer and discus begin outside of Charles Koch Arena at 12 p.m.
