COLLEGE STATION, Texas –
Senior All-American Hunter Veith finished day one of the heptathlon in second place with 3,432, 169 points behind leader Tim Duckworth.

Veith finished day one of the multi-event in second place with a total of 3,432 points, 169 points behind leader Tim Duckworth of Kentucky and 35 points ahead of third place Tyler Adams of Sam Houston State.

"I am really impressed with Hunter's first day performance," said head track and field director Steve Rainbolt. "It is super difficult to go on a national stage like this and operate at a personal record level, but Hunter did that and is in a great position going into day two."

The Cheney, Kan., native started the competition out strong equaling his personal best in the 60m with a time of 6.90, enough for fourth place and 918 points. In the second event of the day, Veith finished third in the long jump with a mark of 7.54m/24-9 scoring 945 points moving him into second place overall with a total score of 1,863. In the shot put Veith finished eighth scoring 691 points with a mark of 13.39m/44-7.

In the final event of the day, the high jump, Veith had his strongest performance of the day. He entered the event at 1.87m/6-1.5, clearing it on his first attempt. On the next bar at 1.90m/6-2.75, he missed on his first attempt and cleared on his second. The turning point of the event came at the height of 1.96m/6-5, Veith missed on his first two attempts before clearing it on his final attempt. He would clear the next four heights before topping out at 2.08m/6-9.75, good enough for fourth place and 878 points.

"Hunter has been dealing with a significant impingement in his take off ankle and the high jump has been challenging," said Steve Rainbolt. "Today was a marvelous competitive effort and he showed true toughness in the high jump. If he competes that way tomorrow he will be tough to beat for the national title."

Day two continues Saturday, March 10 with the 60m hurdles at 12 p.m., followed by the pole vault and concluding with the 1000m at 4 p.m.

"It looks like it will be a major battle for first, second and third. Hunter is right in the thick of that battle so tomorrow should be a very exciting day."
