EMPORIA, Kan. - Senior
Tyra Bickham and junior
Aaron True each started the 2018 outdoor season by winning their respective main events.
Men's Team
True a native of Leroy, Kan., led the strong group of Shocker throwers in the javelin by winning the event with a mark of 69.18m/227-0. All-American
Damien Odle followed behind in third place (66.18m/217-1) and true freshman
Taran Taylor rounded out the top five finishing fifth with a mark of 65.55m/215-1.
John Hoplin finished eighth with a mark of 63.31m/207.8 and
Jeff Ast (59.44m/195.0),
Grant Downes (45.40m/148-11),
Colin Reichenberger (47.92m/157-3) and
Davon Spexarth (56.24m/184-6) each set personal best in the event.
In the discus, Ast and
Isaiah Evans each set recorded personal best marks. Ast threw 44.93m/142.5 and Evans landed his best throw at 43.45m/142-7.
Reichenberger led the group of multi-event athletes that ran in the 110m hurdles finishing the event in second with a wind-aided (4.5) personal best 14.72.
Ben Johnson finished the event in fifth with a wind-aided (4.5) time of 15.08 and Downes placed eighth with a wind-aided (4.5) time of 15.30.
Women's Team
Bickham a native of Blue Springs, Mo., highlighted the day for the Shocker women's team that had 14 athletes competing. She won the discus event with a mark of 44.91m/147-4.
Other top performances on the women's side came in the javelin, junior
Carlea Miles led the group of Shocks by placing third in the event with a throw of 45.53m/149-4.
Kelsey Tenbrink finished 10th (36.76m/120-7),
Krisha Parmar in 11th (36.00m/118-1) and
Meagan Williams threw 35.39m/116-1 to finish 13th. Competing unattached,
Andrea Navarro finished fifth with a mark of 42.40m/139-1.
The women also performed well in the hammer throw, led by Williams who finished fifth with a mark of 44.82m/147-0.
Cassidy Androff and
Amanda Kakoulias each recorded personal best in the event, Androff threw 40.81m/133-11 and Kakoulias recorded a mark of 36.27m/119-0.
Multi-event athletes Miles and
Kendra Henry each performed well in the 100m hurdles, Miles finished seventh with a time of 15.02 and Henry placed 10th with a wind-aided (5.9) personal best time of 15.57.
Next Up
Wichita State will host the Wichita State University Heptathlon/Decathlon on Wednesday, March 21-22, while the rest of the team travels to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the Arkansas Spring Invitational starting on Friday, March 23.
