WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State women's tennis student-athlete
Sandra Honigova is the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week for Jan 29-Feb. 4.
Honigova– a junior from Brno, Czech Republic – knocked off No. 61 Claudia Wiktorin of NC State in the Shockers' home opener last Friday. Honigova won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 in the third flight for WSU. The FIU transfer went on to take down Nanaka Takeuchi of UT-Arlington, 6-4, 6-1 on Sunday at the Wichita Country Club, leading the Shockers to a sweep of the Mavericks.
Honigova is off to a 5-0 start in singles for the 2018 season. Three of her wins came in the third flight, with the other two in flight four. In doubles, Honigova is 2-0 - with three unfinished matches - primarily with sophomore
Marta Bellucco.
This is the second-straight week a WSU women's tennis player has claimed The American's Player of the Week award. Sophomore
Fatima Bizhukova earned the award for the week of Jan. 22-28.
WSU swept UT-Arlington and UMKC last Sunday to move to 5-2 on the season. The Shockers will host Old Dominion (8-1) on Sunday, Feb. 11. The match is set for 10 a.m. at the Wichita Country Club.
