LAKE CHARLES, La. – Wichita State's season opener at McNeese State was suspended in the bottom of the ninth due to fog with the Shockers leading 10-6.
The game will resume at 1 p.m. tomorrow with a runner at second and one out.
Codi Heuer went five innings and gave up four runs on four hits with three walks and a career-high eight strikeouts.
The Cowboys used a two-out solo home run from Shane Selman to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
In the top of the fourth, the Shockers got a leadoff home run from
Greyson Jenista to tie the score at one.
The Shockers took the lead with a big fifth inning. With one out,
Gunnar Troutwine doubled and
Jordan Boyer and
Luke Ritter walked to load the bases. Jenista followed with a walk to drive in Troutwine and Bohm homered to centerfield to clear the bases for a 6-1 lead.
The Cowboys answered in the bottom of the fifth. McNeese used two singles, a walk and a hit by pitch to score three runs to pull within 6-4.
Ritter led off the seventh with a walk and moved to second on an error. With two outs,
Mason O'Brien was intentionally walked and
Dayton Dugas doubled to left field to scored Ritter for a 7-4 lead.
Travis Young followed with a two-run double to score O'Brien and Dugas to push the lead to 9-4.
McNeese added a run in the seventh to cut the lead to 9-5, but a Jenista RBI single pushed the Shocker lead to 10-5 in the top of the eighth.
After back-to-back hits in the ninth, the Cowboys cut the lead to 10-6 before the game was suspended due to fog.
The Shockers and Cowboys will resume the game at 1 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 17 and play game two after that one is over.
