WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State's 2018 Pizza Hut Shocker Sports Hall of Fame inductees, Karen Augspurger, Brian Burgamy, Natasha Fife, Dustin Garza, Mary Elizabeth Hooper and Paul Smith, were honored at halftime of the Shockers' game Sunday and at a dinner Saturday night at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Augspurger, a two-time MVC Libero of the Year who played volleyball at Wichita State from 2001-04, and Hooper, a four-time first team all-conference selection who played from 2008-11, were both introduced at the dinner by their coach,
Chris Lamb.
Burgamy, an All-American who played baseball at Wichita State from 2000-02, was introduced by his coach Gene Stephenson.
Fife, who was the first Women's Athletic Director at Wichita State from 1971-84, was introduced by former student-athlete Marcia Alterman.
Garza, who was a two-time All-American, played golf for the Shockers from 2007-10, and was introduced by his coach
Grier Jones.
Smith, an All-America doubles player, played tennis for the Shockers from 1980-83 and was introduced by his coach Rex Coad.
Each inductee was also introduced with their families at halfcourt Sunday at the game in front of a sellout crowd.
The addition of this year's class brings the total of former coaches and student-athletes in the Hall of Fame to 140, while there are 13 at-large selections.
Here's a look at each 2018 inductee's success at Wichita State:
Karen Augspurger, Volleyball (2001-04)
Finished her Wichita State career with 1,477 digs, 756 assists, 15 kills and 55 service aces…A two-time Missouri Valley Conference Libero of the Year in 2003 and 2004, she helped the Shockers to the first NCAA Tournament appearance and MVC title in school history in 2004…She earned all-region honorable mention and all-MVC Tournament team honors in 2004….An outstanding student-athlete, she was a first team CoSIDA Academic All-District selection in 2004 and a first team all-MVC Scholar-Athlete in 2003 and 2004 and an honorable mention choice in 2002…She is a member of the MVC All-Centennial Team…Is listed in the top-five in two Shocker career statistical categories at the time of her induction including fourth in digs per set (3.51) and fifth in digs (1,477)…Played professionally in The Netherlands from 2005-07 for Plantina Longa.
Brian Burgamy, Baseball (2000-02)
Finished his Wichita State career with a .356 batting average, 254 hits, 159 runs, 53 doubles, seven triples, 16 home runs, 146 RBI and 55 stolen bases…A multiple All-America selection in 2002, Burgamy was also the 2002 Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year…He earned first team all-Valley honors in 2002 and second team in 2001…He was a first team all-region selection in 2002 and was named to the NCAA Regional all-tournament team in 2000 and 2002…Named MVP of the 2000 MVC Tournament and to the MVC all-tournament team in 2002…Played on two NCAA Tournament teams and two conference championship teams…Second Team All-America selection by Baseball America and Sports Weekly in 2002 and third team selection by the ABCA and Collegiate Baseball…At the time of his induction, he is listed in the top-25 in the Shocker career record books in several categories including 17th in batting average (.356) and 24th in doubles (53)…Drafted in the ninth round of the 2002 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres.
Natasha Fife, Women's Athletic Director (1971-84)
First Wichita State Women's Athletic Director…Associate AD when two departments merged from 1981-84…Joined WSU physical education staff in 1959 and taught for 39 years…Coached WSU women's volleyball, basketball, tennis, and bowling…Represented WSU at Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) meetings…Retired from WSU in 1998…Also was the most dominant female golfer in Kansas during the post-World War II era…Was a five-time Kansas Women's Golf Association Amateur champion and seven-time KWGA Senior Amateur champion…Inducted into the Kansas Golf Hall of Fame in 1993.
Dustin Garza, Men's Golf (2007-10)
Finished his career at Wichita State with 12 wins and 26 top-10 finishes along with a 72.24 stroke average…Member of three Missouri Valley Conference championship teams in 2008, 2009 and 2010…Played in four NCAA Tournaments…Won the MVC Individual championship in 2009 and 2010…MVC Player of the Year in 2009 and 2010…MVC Newcomer of the Year in 2007…First team All-America selection in 2010 and third team in 2009…First WSU men's golfer to earn first team All-America honors…School record 14-time MVC Golfer of the Week…All-Regional team in 2009 and 2010…2010 All-Nicklaus Team honoree…MVC all-conference selection in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010…Won seven events in 2010 and finished his career with 12 wins…Had a 70.93 stroke average in 2010…Finished his career in the NCAA's top-10 all-time collegiate victories list…Shot a career-low round of 61 in 2008 and a career-low tournament of 200 in 2008…Selected to represent the United States in the 2010 Palmer Cup…Made his PGA Tour debut in 2010…Played on web.com tour from 2011-14…In 2015, became a financial advisor and is currently the Insurance Director for Edinburg School District in Texas.
Mary Elizabeth Hooper, Volleyball (2008-11)
Finished her Wichita State career with 4,820 assists, 410 kills, 73 service aces, 943 digs and 238 blocks…First player in Shocker volleyball history to be a four-time first team all-conference selection…Played in four NCAA Tournaments…Member of one conference championship team…Named to the MVC all-tournament team in 2009 and 2011…Collegiate Volleyball Update National Freshman of the Year and Central Region Freshman of the Year in 2008…Helped team to undefeated regular-season in 2008 at 29-0…2008 All-Central Region team…First team all-Missouri Valley Conference in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011…2008 MVC Freshman of the Year…2011 WSU Senior Honor Woman…An outstanding student-athlete, was named first team all-MVC Scholar-Athlete in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team in 2011…At the time of her induction, is second in the Shocker career record books in assists (4,820), second in assists per set (10.64) and 11th in sets played (453).
Paul Smith, Men's Tennis (1980-83)
Member of four conference championship teams from 1980-83…Helped the Shockers finish in the top-20 of the national team rankings in each of his last three seasons…Led WSU to three appearances at the NCAA Team Championships (1980, 82, 83)…1983 Doubles All-American who teamed with Roberto Saad for a 37-2 record…The pair won the ITCA National Indoor Doubles Championship in 1983 and reached the semifinals outdoors at NCAA Nationals…Also qualified for the 1983 NCAA Singles Championship and finished the season tied for 55th in the national rankings…A four-time Missouri Valley Conference singles champion: 1980 (No. 4), 1981 (No. 3), 1982 (No. 2), 1983 (No. 2)…Four-time MVC champion in doubles: 1980 (No. 1), 1981 (No. 2), 1982 (No. 1) and 1983 (No. 1)…Member of the MVC All-Centennial Team…Member of the New Zealand Davis Cup squad in 1979…Had world rankings of No. 380 in singles and No. 230 in doubles…Won over 18 national and international doubles titles…Ranked No. 1 in the U.S. in 35-and-over doubles…Twice ranked No. 1 in the U.S. in 40-and-over doubles…Won 16 USTA National Senior Gold Ball Doubles Championships…Won two ITF World Doubles Championships; 35 and over in Buenos Aires in 2000 and 45 and over in Antalya, Turkey in 2004…Latest success was runner-up in ITF World 55 Doubles Championships in Helsinki, Finland in 2016.
