Shockers Compete at Pitt State, Washington

WICHITA, Kan. -  
Wichita State's men's and women's track and field teams competed with nearly 20 athletes at three meets.
 
The Shockers sent 19 athletes to the Pitt State Invitational in Pittsburg Kan., two athletes competed in the Bill Butterworth Classic and Zack Penrod ran at the UW Invitational in Seattle, Wash.
 
Entering the weekend, Penrod led the American Athletic Conference in the mile (4:10.09), the sophomore would run a personal best 4:06.82 to finish fifth at the UW Invitational. Competing unattached Rebekah Topham finished fifth in a personal record time of 9:16.32 in the 3000m, Sifan Hassan running for Nike Oregon Project won the 3000m in a world leading time 8:34.45.
 
Multiple athletes set season best and personal records at the Pitt State Invitational, including Josh Klein in the men's 5000m (14:56.97), Winny Koskei in the women's 5000m (17:38.64) Ethan Kossover in the men's 3000m (8:49.66) and Reno Law in the men's mile (4:13.45). Senior Austin Chippeaux cleared a season best 2.04m/6-8.25 to finish second in the men's high jump. Other Shockers with top three finishes in their respected events include Alyssa Wheeler winning the women's open pole vault (3.58m/11-9), Hayden Bugner finishing second in the men's invitational pole vault (5.03m/16-6), Kossover placed third in the unseeded 3000m and Law finished third in seeded mile. Competing unattached Yazmine Wright finished the women's 800m second with a personal best 2:14.16.
 
Freshman Abbi Bird and senior John Duvall competed in the Bill Butterworth Classic, Duvall ran 7.16 to finish fourth in the 60m and Bird finished the long jump fourth with a mark of 1.53m/5-0.25. Competing unattached Alex Adams won the women's weight throw with a personal best mark of 17.04m/55-11.
 
The Shockers are next in action as host of the Herm Wilson Invitational starting Friday, Feb. 2 at 10:30 a.m., continuing Saturday, Feb. 3 at 9:30 a.m.
