Shockers Claim Road Win at Tulane, 64-56

NEW ORLEANS – Three players finished in double-figures and Wichita State held Tulane to 37 percent shooting to register the first road win of the season with a 64-56 victory Saturday afternoon in Devlin Fieldhouse.

Wichita State (7-12, 2-3) notched its first-ever American Athletic Conference road win and first true road win of the season. The Shockers have now won back-to-back games after taking down Memphis earlier in the week.

Rangie Bessard led the Shockers with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Cesaria Ambrosio totaled a career-high 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Diamond Lockhart added 11 points, four assists and three rebounds.

Wichita State finished the game at 45.8 percent from the floor, including 4-of-11 from long range – with three of those treys coming in the opening minutes of the first quarter. The Shocker defense was all over the floor creating season highs in blocked shots (12) and steals (16) and tying a season best with 20 forced turnovers.

The American's leading scorer, Kolby Morgan, poured in a game-high 26 points. Wichita State locked down Morgan in the second half, limiting her to just four points after torching WSU with 22 in the first.

1st Quarter
After struggling from long distance the last couple games, Wichita State came out red-hot from three to give the Shockers an early 13-8 lead. Wichita State started the game 3-of-5 from downtown with triples from Cesaria Ambrosio, Diamond Lockhart and Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage.

Both teams combined to shoot 8-of-15 from long range for the quarter with WSU finishing 3-of-6 and Tulane at 5-of-9. A three at the buzzer gave the Green Wave a 23-21 lead at the end of the first.

The Shockers led by as many as seven over the first 10 minutes.

Ambrosio led the Shockers with seven points, while Tulane's Kolby Morgan lit up the scoreboard with 15 points. Morgan and Cheatham (6) tallied 21 of the 23 points for Tulane.

2nd Quarter
Bessard, Ambrosio and Lozada-Cabbage continued to lead the scoring attack to start the period to give the Shockers a 31-27 lead with 4:45 to go until halftime.

During the stretch when WSU regained the lead, Tulane was held scoreless for more than three minutes of game action. As hot as the two teams were in the first quarter, they came back to earth in the second. Tulane hit 40 percent to Wichita State's 33 percent in the quarter, but the Shockers had the lead at halftime, 35-33.

The halftime lead marked the first time this season Wichita State held a halftime lead in a true road game.

Morgan led all scorers with 22 first half points on 8-of-11 shooting. She was the only player in double-figures for either team.

3rd Quarter
A 6-0 run to begin the second half gave the Shockers their largest lead, 41-33, and it wasn't until the 6:09 mark that Tulane scored its first points of the half. The Green Wave would miss eight of its first nine attempts.

Tulane cut the deficit to two as play shifted to the fourth, 48-46.

Wichita State forced the Green Wave into 29.4 percent shooting in the third, but shot only 38.5 percent themselves.

4th Quarter
Back-to-back scores from Bessard at the midway point bumped the Shocker lead to five after Tulane had cut it to one. Another Bessard score inside followed by a steal and score for Ambrosio gave Wichita State a lead of 60-51, with 3:03 remaining.

Ambrosio added another bucket and Lockhart swished a pair of free throws after a Tulane technical to make it 64-53 with a minute to play. A Tulane three with 25 seconds left would be the final score of the game, as the Shockers would run the clock out.
