Jones Announces Men's Golf Schedule

9/8/2017 11:30:00 AM

WICHITA, Kan. - Head coach Grier Jones announced Friday morning the 2017-18 Wichita State men's golf schedule, which will include 10 tournaments overall, four in the fall and six in the spring.

The fall schedule will feature familiar faces through all four tournaments with the Shockers opening the year at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational [Sept. 11-12] in Huntington, W.V. This will be the third straight year that Wichita State has opened its schedule with the Joe Feaganes Invite after finishing tied for sixth in 2016 and third in 2015.

"The fall schedule is pretty much identical to last year," said Jones. "[There are] a lot of teams we've played before and it will allow us to see how the team will compete and also how the freshman get use to playing college golf."

The Shockers return four of the five man lineup that won the 2016-17 Missouri Valley Conference Championship including conference Golfer of the Year and All-Conference selection Yannik Emmert. Gage Ihrig, winner of the 107th Kansas Amateur Match Play Championship this summer, also returns alongside 2015 All-Conference selection Conrad Walcher and 2015 conference Newcomer of the Year and two-time all-conference selection Jacob Bishop. With no sophomores on the roster, the Shockers have added three freshman and a junior transfer from the University of Kansas.

The Shockers return to the Ram Masters Invitational for the sixth straight season Sept. 18-19, after finishing third in 2016. Bishop led the Shockers with his season low-18 and 54-hole scores en-route to a tied for ninth finish individually. The Bill Ross Intercollegiate will follow Oct. 9-10 in Kansas City, Mo., for the fifth straight year; the Shockers finished tied for fifth in 2016 and won the tournament in 2015.

The fall schedule will wrap up with the Herb Wimberly Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M., for the eighth year running. Emmert led the Shockers to third place finish as a team and fourth individually after carding par or better in all three rounds.

The spring schedule will consist of six tournaments beginning with the USD Intercollegiate [Feb. 12-13] in San Diego, Calif., in which Emmert dominated the field in 2016. A combination of 9-under, even par and 4-under rounds saw the German native win his first collegiate tournament with his lowest 54-hole score of the season.

The Shockers will stay in California for the their first appearance at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate the same week [Feb. 16-18] held in Palm Desert, Calif.

The GCU Invitational follows [Mar. 16-17] in Phoenix, Ariz., before the Shockers travel to the opposite side of the country for the Furman Intercollegiate [Mar. 23-25] held in Greenville, S.C. Ihrig and Emmert led the Shockers last year in Greenville after both finished tied for 14th.

The spring schedule will conclude with a trip to Chandler, Ariz., for the Wyoming Cowboy Classic [Apr. 9-10] and the Boilermaker Invitational [Apr. 14-15]. Walcher led the Shockers at the Cowboy Classic in 2016, finishing tied for sixth individually behind a career low-54 hole score, while the Shockers return to face Purdue for the first time since 2014.

"We lost a couple of tournaments due to coaching changes so we're going back to Purdue for the first time in a number of years," Jones said. "It's a real tough course, a tough competition and I'm glad they let us in."

The Shockers will compete at their first American Athletic Conference Championship held at the Copperhead Course, the home to the PGA Tour's Valspar Championship, in Palm Harbor, Fla., April 22-24.
