CHISINAU, Moldova – Gabriela Porubin, a rising senior on the Wichita State women's tennis team, is representing Moldova this week in the 2017 Fed Cup.

Moldova is one of 15 nations competing in Group III of the Europe/Africa Zone, June 12-17.

Though she previously represented Moldova in the 2013 and 2014 Fed Cups, Porubin's third appearance in the event comes with added significance. Her hometown of Chisinau is the Group III host.

Now in its 55
th year, the Fed Cup (the female equivalent of the Davis Cup) is the world's largest annual women's international team sports competition, with nearly 100 nations competing for the world title in a series of group stages.

Dual matches are played under a best-of-three match format: two singles, one doubles.

On Tuesday, Porubin helped Moldova to a 3-0 win over Mozambique when she and doubles partner Alexandra Perper teamed up for a 6-1, 6-0 victory

The win improved Porubin to 7-1 all-time in Fed Cup matches (6-0 in doubles).

Moldova – ranked 74
th in the world -- continues pool play with matches against Morocco (1-0) and Algeria (0-1).

The winner of the four-team Pool D faces the winner of Pool B (Ireland, Cyprus, Iceland and Kenya) in a one-game playoff that will determine which team is promoted to Group II for next year's tournament. Moldova has finished a victory shy of promotion in each of the last two years.

Porubin is one of the most-accomplished players in WSU history, on pace to finish in the program's top-3 all-time in combined singles and doubles wins (158 heading into her final season).
